Great price if it was for a pair, they sound ok but nothing special. You would be better off sinking 1k into a used set of speakers and get more bang for your buck.
I am a huge kef fan but the q series is very budget and to me sound dull.

In saying that if you must buy new and only want to spend about 1k these are a great buy and will beat the pants off most in the same price range

    • An improvement over the predecessor IMO, I had the Q700s briefly and never really like them.

I have the Q900s and I don't agree with your assessment. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive and they don't sound muddy at all.

        • Each to their own, I've got a house full of Kef products, I found that series lacking.

        • Agree have heard these and was very impressed especially at the price point.

    • agree 100% . They are good speakers for the US market bcoz of their favourable pricing in the local market.
KEF starts getting serious in R series, which is just 1 step above this Q series, whether floorstanders or bookshelves.

    • For white, black are $1,250. picture doesn't change however

      • Can of black paint will fix that 👌

Unfortunately stuck with headphones, WAF is very low

  • People with only one hearing aid probably only need one speaker.

"Please note they are $599 EACH. This caused a stir in the comments last time."

Of course it caused a stir?!! This is a pricing scam, plain and simple.

Who's gonna buy one speaker? The same person that buys an Ikea bed without slats???!

    • +6

      There's always one clown…

      • Please explain why anyone would need to purchase 1, 3, or 5 of these speakers……

        • Because the best centre is the same as the fronts.

Pretty sure it was you flogging up the thread last time….

    • +2

Ahh people. In the US most speakers are sold as individual units, for whatever reason.

There are also those that have proper cinema set ups, in which they have a full sized single speaker behind the screen for the centre channel (go to any audio place).

So yes, people DO buy single speakers.

      • well I wasn't aware that people put a full size single speaker behind the screen?! Is that normal usage? If so - then I take it all back!

        • +1

For the optimum setup, yes it is.

        • +3

Yep. Your centre speaker should be identical to your L/R front speakers. Or as close too.

Most don't though because well, hard to put a floor stander behind your TV. But for cinema setups/screens. Yes.

Centre speaker is as important as L/R fronts. So always try to match as close as possible. These tiny centre speakers in home theatre boxes are wrong.

        • Depends on the speaker, design and room layout. A dedicated home cinema room with acoustic transparent screen would be benefit from a uniform LCR speaker setup. This means all three speakers are the same and interchangeable and will provide a better tone balance and sound stage. M&K sound, Krix and B&W Cinema series are some of these design. Not sure if this Kef Q series are designed for such use. It will still work but a dedicated Q series center speaker would be better.

          • @Nomoneynotalk: Need those super expensive screens as well to let the audio through… ill stick to my horizontal.

            • @hypie: Most people, including myself is using the horizontal center speaker. Saying that, if you have a lot of coins and then the center speaker in the center behind the screen will give the dialogues better placement. Ie, the voice from the actor’s mouth instead of from below or above the screen.

    • How is it a pricing scam if they clearly disclose that the price is per speaker?

      • It isn't - I'm clearly clueless about home entertainment system setups, as per my previous comments.

And, thinking more about it - even if there was no possible, practical usage for a single speaker, it still wouldn't count a contravention of component pricing. Because as you say, it is advertised as 1 unit…and if sound comes out when you plug it in, then it's good to go.

        • It's also an oddly American thing.

When I was buying mine I looked at prices here vs the US. Nearly ALL places in the US have listings for singles and pairs.

No idea specifically why. As above, for these 'entry' level speakers it's unlikely someone has an expensive audio passing screen.

Just one of those weird things.

  • Good speaker but you have to invest more to get the best out of it.

    • when you say invest more, to which specific product do you think one should invest more?
