[East Side, VIC] Looking for a Trusted Local Mechanic

I'm looking for recommendations on mechanics around the Box Hill/east side area or tips that I can use to find one for myself. Ideally, I'd like to have a mechanic that is honest with me about pricing in terms of what does/doesn't need to be repaired so I'm not throwing money at things that don't need to be fixed. I have looked online using sites like AutoGuru but would like to get other's thoughts before choosing.

I've only recently come to own a car, which is a Mitsubishi, and would like to have a mechanic that I can stick with for a while.

    J&V Warren Smith Auto Service - 145 Union Road Surrey Hills

    Used to bring my cars here, always great service and honest.

    Fixed issues in my Swift that the dealer couldn't (rattling noise, rough engine start etc) and charged me like $10 on top of the normal service costs.

    Now drive a Kia so servicing it via the dealership to get the free road side but if I need a mechanic I would go there.

    I remember asking him for a car purchase recommendation and all he told me was to look around the workshop and not buy the stuff I see there. Plenty of Euros there…lol

    where in the east are you?
    I am a bit biased of course but i used to work for and prior to that was a long term customer (and still am) at Ultra Tune in Clayton (1362 Centre Road)
    Gary and his daughter Kerryn have the store and have for many years. Gary is a no nonsense and affordable mechanic.
    He does not over charge and is very transparent with his works and costs
    He wont fix something if it is not broken and will always consult with you at every step of the way.

    Can not recommend them enough
    I have a new car now and i still have them service it, i do not go to the dealer at all. I would not trust anyone except Gary and his team to look after my cars.

    Couple of users on here have gone there for various things and have also been very happy.
    Also members of my car club also bring their vehicles to him for their work

      From what you say it seems like they have quite a few loyal customers so they must be pretty good.

    Have you asked your neighbours?
    Most people have a ready-built network of people in very similar situations, living all around them.

    Goodyear Autocare Boronia. Gary runs a family owned and operated business. Have taken 4 of my cars there over the last 8 years and also take my mum's and sister's cars there for servicing. Right next to Boronia station so you can catch a train to and from Box Hill station.

    I can highly recommend Knox Automatic Transmissions, he does not charge for the Inspection, normally it will cost you $75. He also has very positive reviews on Google

      Thanks for the recommendations and links to go with them. They both seem pretty great from the reviews.
      I'll keep them in mind when choosing.

    I'd recommened Ashwood Motors, very nice and honest. I've saved hundreds through them, I save extra by sourcing my own parts (they don't mind) and just charge for labour (low). otherwise, they're always happy to look at issues without charging and if they can fix it on the spot they usally do. (had them fix multiple small issues for less then $50 when others near by wanted at least 200 just to look at it lol)
