Looking for an external hard drive with password protect for home use

Hi guys

I am looking for an external hard drive 500GB - 1TB SSD which has password protection feature.

Samsung T5 ($2051TB) and T7 touch ($280 1TB) appeal to me. Samsung T5 seems out of stock on Samsungs website.

Has anyone got any other brand recommendations?

Thanks for your help

  • Samsung T5 1TB available are Harvey norman for $248

If you have access to Samsung education site, you can get the T7 touch 1TB for $279 (with the $50 sign up voucher) which is a cracker of a deal

    • I just purchased from the Samsung Education Store. I paid $329. The Education Store would not accept my $50 welcome voucher. Still a good deal at that price, but if you are sure the welcome voucher can be applied at the Education Store, then I would love to know. Cheers

  • If you have a professional version of Windows you can use BitLocker to password protect any drive. I use it on a few USB sticks and it's quite seamless.

    • think I have windows home.

      • Buy an upgrade key for cheap. Much easier.

  • WD Passport USB C portable SSD's also have hw encryption. Sold at Officeworks just like the Samsung. https://www.amazon.com.au/WD-Silver-Passport-Portable-Storag…

  • +1

Use VeraCrypt. Works with any drive.

  • If you use Mac, just format it with encrypted partition.

    • do I need to format with FAT32 before using on mac?

      • The encrypted partition is HDFS+ with encryption, not FAT32.

  • I've had a Samsung T7 touch for a while now. It's a very neat solution and about the size of a credit card although a bit thicker. It works well. You need to install the software on the software to unlock on EVERY machine that you use the drive on if you apply the password and/or fingerprint lock. That software is always available on the drive in the clear and I don't think you can delete it. Can use it on Mac, PC, and Android if it has USB on-the-go.

    • Thank you. do I need to format with FAT32 before using on mac?

      • My T7 is encrypted. It initially presents as a FAT drive (not FAT32) of about 42MB with a drive letter of F: with the Samsung decrypting software visible as Read Only files. When unlocked it shows as whatever capacity drive you have bought and can change to a different drive letter. Mine is 500GB and formatted NTFS for a PC. I don't recall formatting it but probably did. Given it has Mac and Android compatibility then it must be able to work as FAT32. It can take 4 fingerprints and about 10 pics of each print so you don't need to be fussy about which angle you present your finger. Even when set up for prints their usage is still optional. You can use the password which is obligatory to define if you encrypt. Encryption is optional but why wouldn't you do it? Firmware and software updating is painless except for the need to re-do your prints.

  • Do you need it to be an SSD? My work has used encrypted hard drives with a physical keypad on them so they work natively without any special software.
