Got a hue bridge for Christmas and have had that and an led light (in a lamp) running since. Both quarterly bills have gone from around $250 to around $500. Housemate says it's the only thing that's changed. Is this possible, even if I had the lamp running 24/7? I really only use the lamp at night.
Housemate Thinks Hue Bridge Has Doubled Electricity Bill

It uses 1.5 watts apparently. Assuming 25c per kWh, it would use about 50c worth quarterly. The lamp would obviously use a little more, but only operated at night, would be a couple of bucks probably.
You brought a bridge? Awesome i never got one :(
I know a friend of a friend that has a bridge for sale… lol

Build one and get over it? ;)
Do the maths - ~15W LED light running for 24 hours = 15 * 24 = 360Wh = 0.36 kWh
at around 91 days per quarter, running it 24/7 would consume 91 * 0.36 ~= 33kWh
at an electricity cost of $0.30/kWh, that makes 33 * 0.30 = $9.90.Guess you can blame the housemate 😆
They won't cause the bill to double…. Read https://www.choice.com.au/home-improvement/energy-saving/lig…
Check if the bill is an estimate or an actual read.
Sounds like a neighbour might be stealing your electricity.
Oh no, not this again…
Might be the same guy that uses the public BBQ to save on electricity.
I was thinking of this one
Still the best story on ozbargain to date
@Donaldhump: The risotto bit always cracks me up.
so the bridge runs at 250mA which equates to 0.25watt. using the SA gov's calculate appliance for running this 24/7 @42 cents is $0.23 a quarter. The bulb running all the time is another $8.26 a quarter.

let me know how you got on with telling your flatmate. .
is this going to be like that crazy reddit story where the guys house mate was actually running multiple crypto miners in the garage hidden.

LOOK IN THE GARAGGGEEEEEE
Ha, that was great!
Simple, buy a wi-fi power point with energy tracking. Track it over an hour of use (show them that it's running that whole time). Calculate out.
Housemate Thinks Hue Bridge Has Doubled Electricity Bill
Yes must be the hue bridge and not the fact that people have been in their homes 24x7 for months on end with every device running.
Exactly this. My electricity usage has more than tripled because of this (from average 9 kWh to 30kWH). Two computers and two electric heaters running for most of the working day.
Question your flatmates argument of 'Nothing has changed except' because the moment he/she used a toaster, power point, switch of any sort or opened the damn fridge, you can technically say 'something has changed'.
That sounds like a very productive way to approach the situation..
Check that your electricity provider hasn't changed the plan you are on…
Any computers been sounding loud recently? Someone could have a crypto currency mining virus.
Sounds like someone's running a heater or another fridge with that sort of jump.
