New monitor received - how to tweak my settings to reach full potential

Hi guys

Bought this gaming pc https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331420 a few years back and it's still going strong.

I didn't really change anything except adding an extra 8gb of RAM. I'm slowly getting back into gaming and been playing a lot of COD.

Decided to uggrade my 10 year old monitor (ordered the Omen HP deal but got cancelled) and bought LG27 GL850.

Any suggestions on how I can reach the full potential of my monitor?

  1. I know my current GPU probably needs an upgrade but I'm going to save a bit more before making a purchase.
  2. As for COD: I'm now getting like 48hz refresh rate, which is not good at all. Do I need to change some settings in the display settings to make sure I reach higher FPS?
  3. Anything else I should do/upgrade?

Thanks!

Edit: my current set up

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600X 3
GPU: RX570 4gb

Ideally rent a colour calibration tool (they're very cheap to rent) and calibrate the monitor for your light settings. Use profiles for different times of the day if possible eg at night with room lighting and during the day.

Else you can find a good reviewer such as Tom's Hardware or TFTCentral and use their calibrated settings.

Assuming you are using G-sync while gaming, the the monitor refresh rate will match the video card framerate up to the monitors maximum refresh rate. So you will see the monitor reporting low refresh rates. For COD obviously you want as high FPS as possible so many people play with the lowest settings.

If you mean you have a static refresh rate of 48Hz then something is definitely set wrong.

    • thanks for the detailed response, appreciate it!

Do you know where I can rent one in Sydney? I just did a quick search, none came up.

Might even post an ad on AirTasker to get someone to do it. How much is it normally to rent one, don't want to get jipped!

Yep I will look into this.

I'm actually using RX570, so FreeSync. I played COD last night I was getting around 100FPS, doubled what I had before with my old monitor.

The LG monitor I bought goes up to 144hz, but I guess I will have to upgrade my GPU in order to get that?

  • You need a faster GPU to achieve faster refresh. What CPU/GPU are you currently running?

    • GPU rx 570 4gb
      CPU ryzen 5 1600x
