Looking for SIM only plan with 850mhz coverage

So I recently purchased a Acer Liquid MT which does only has 850mhz / 2100mhz band support.

Problem with that is:

  • Three, the carrier I'm currently with does not have 850mhz and has poor service, which is why I'm leaving.

  • Optus and their resellers (TPG, Liveconnected) is using the 900mhz network instead of 850mhz, which this phone does not support. So that's an out.

  • Vodafone has rolled out the 850mhz network, which this phone supports. However, their SIM only plans aren't good value ($20 per month for $180 of calls and 200 megabytes of data doesn't quite cut it compared to TPG / Liveconnected). Hence Vodafone looks like the only option to me, but their cap plans have too little data and I don't want to spend more than $30 if possible.

  • IIRC Telstra has no 3G resellers? Lycamobile is Telstra based but they only work on 2G bands.

Any advice?

TLDR:

I'm looking for a SIM only plan. Criterias are: Under $30 a month. Must support 850mhz. Preferably more than 200 megs of data per month.

  • Voda or nothing pretty much
Try redbull mobile - but it will be a bit more than 30 a month, unless you go for the yearly option.

And are you sure 3 does not have 850, I would be shocked if they did not use the voda 850.
And also I thought they had access to the telstra 850

What about the specials voda have to move 3 to voda?

    • Yeah I think 3 have access to both Telstra 850 (in areas where there is Optus or Voda coverage) and Voda 850MHz… Your problem might be getting a new contract on 3, I think Voda have made it a legacy product and are no longer selling new customers.

Your only other option is to look at Telstra, but if you think Voda's offerings aren't good value, then you'll think Telstra's are horrendous!

      Crazy Johns resell Vodafone.

    • I believe 3 has 850mhz, but the reception is fairly bad. I'm hoping that switching over to Voda will actually improve things…

Any word on Crazy Johns? Reliability, customer service etc?

      • if 3 has access to the voda 850 then changing will 99% not change anything
Telstra is the only option - thier pre-paid caps are pretty good value

  • +1

I suggest covering the phone in lube and shoving it up the person who sold it to you…if they lied to you…don't use lube!

  • RedBull surely meets your needs. $365 for 365 days with 5Gb/month

Pennytel PennySim have a range of plans. https://www.pennytel.com.au/penny-sim/voice-plans

    Vodafone network.

Do your sums as to whether the data charges will suffice. They charge in 1kB sessions which is much better than many telcos that bleed your quota by hundreds more than that for even a tiny session.

Also factor in the upfront costs but no complaints here after several months.
