No internet, Secured - laptop is connected to internet but has no access

I recently had my laptop hardware fixed, the technician came to remove the back case and replace it. I assume something must have been damaged because my laptop will not steadily connect to the internet anymore. It will connect for 5-10 minutes and then crash and show "no internet, secured". before the technician came the internet was perfectly fine but does not work properly anymore. I have tried all the steps:
- all the commands to put into cmd prompt
- update driver details
- reboot and restarting
- disabling the network, restarting, etc.
- removed IPv6
- troubleshoot
.. I have done everything that can be found online but all the things only are only temporary fixes. it will reconnect back to the internet and then lose access "no internet, secured". I called the Dell Company to ask them what happened and spoke with a technician who guided through all other steps but still it does not work. they said they will escalate and find out what is happening.

Does anyone know what has happened? it was working perfectly before the laptop parts were taken apart and replaced (case), and after the internet now barely works.
please help

  • Do you know anyone with a usb wifi/ethernet dongle for testing?

    • my other laptops work completely fine, same as other portables like phone, ipad etc … i think it is definitely something with the laptop itself. i can wireless hotspot and/or cable hotspot but the wifi wireless simply just does not work

Wireless hotspot is the same as wifi? So why does that work?

          Bluetooth connection?

          • @Muzeeb: Possibly, but I thought that was called tethering.

Have you tried forgetting the network then re-adding it?

SFC /scannow, from an admin cmd prompt (if you haven't).

When you can, get back on the Dell website and download your wifi drivers again. Then, uninstall the wifi adapter INCLUDING the driver software, in device manager. Double-check programs & features and uninstall wifi software if it's there. Shut down the laptop.

Pull the power plug from your modem. While it's shut off, boot the laptop and install the Dell wifi driver you downloaded. Connect to your phone via hotspot and see how it goes. If it seems stable(r), power your modem back on. Disconnect from the hotspot and connect to the modem.

If this doesn't help, create a live Linux bootable OS USB:

    https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=276

There are many articles on how to create the USB (I use Rufus). You'll then need to boot from that USB.

See if wifi is stable using Linux. If so, you know it's a MS issue. Otherwise, your wifi card may be damaged.

    Good luck.

what is the wifi signal strength when it initially connects? it may be a loose or improper connection with the antenna cables connected to the NIC within the laptop. Might have been overlooked by the tech when it was being fixed

  • DNS settings, or theyve installed a virus scanner or something that changes the dns.

  • This has been happening with my WiFi as well, happens a few devices but most commonly on one where I have to restart it whereas my other devices just connects after a minute or so. What is going on?

  • This happening to me at work, no problems for my colleagues.
And it's not a hardware issue cause I have no problems connecting my work laptop to my home WiFi.

Open the back of your laptop and push down on the WiFi antenna cable. Could just be loose.

Login into your router - http://192.168.1.1/ or equivalent

and check your username and password are correct - double check the right protocol etc PPPoE

  • Use one of your other laptops to download Ubuntu (or another live distro) and put it on a USB (using a tool like Rufus). Then boot the live environment (not the installer) from the USB and see how the WiFi performs. If it has issues, then it's most likely related to the hardware. If it works, then it's most likely a software issue and you can reinstall Windows using the Dell OS Recovery tool.

  • UPDATE: i fixed it .. what happened was the wireless adapter cable was not connected. I had to open the case up and connect it and now the wifi is perfect. maybe the technician forgot to connect it back ..?
