  • I prefer a case with a front window for RGB fans

    • Lol are gee bee

I like no RGB, ever. The R4 I have has no windows and is quiet. Just the way I like it.

      I'm 100% with you.

I don't mind a bit of subtle lighting in useful places (illuminated keyboards have a real purpose, for instance) but the current trend of rainbow vomit lighting is incredibly tacky and utterly pointless.

    • I have the R5 with no windows, so nice.

  • hmmm it doesnt look to be very thermal friendly.. i do like the looks though nice and simple

    • It's aimed for silence, but thermals are still pretty good.

      Two things:

      1. How is it not thermal friendly? It's got a massive hole in the top, which will provide excellent passive ventilation through convection. And almost the entire front can be used for intake. Seems pretty good to me.

      2. Thermal issues are massively over-rated for the vast majority of builds. Even an expensive build with high-end components will typically draw 750W maximum under full load (usually much less) and that much heat simply doesn't require anything fancy to deal with - 3-4 decent case fans is plenty. The rest of it is just posing and show for bragging rights. The current model Mac Pro does a pretty good job of demonstrating this.

A big case does not equal good cooling, and a small case can actually be easier to cool effectively.

      • I agree with you but the Define series has always been about silence though, that big fat front panel with sound-dampening material isn't gonna be as good as a mesh panel for example. Oh and there're 2 top panels (one solid with, you guess it, sound-dampening materials and one vented). For such an expensive case, there should be a mesh/vented front panel included as well imo. That would make the case truly flexible.

That said, the Define 7 cooling is still very good regardless from everywhere I read, there should be zero thermal issue with the provided fans. Unless maybe an i9 was dropped in it ;)

        • The front of the case does have a mesh filter and vents to allow the front fans to breathe easy.

I have the R5 version of this case, and the thermals are great, and the case is dead silent. I have 2 Noctua 140mm in the front, 2 of the fractal fans in the base blowing in, and the last Fractal fan on the back as an exhaust. Top is closed up to keep it silent.

  • What are the benefits of such an expensive case?

To be fair, this is a very large case and the extra materials and costs of shipping to wholesalers are going to be steep. And it's a niche product, which tends to increase the price too.

Build quality is definitely a major factor - strength, rigidity and premium materials are definitely part of the increased price. Some clever design features for improved presentation (cable management, flexible mounting brackets etc) if that's important. And the big glass panels are expensive, so that adds to the retail price.

But mostly it's just a luxury thing. A Polo Ralph Lauren t-shirt is really not much different to any other $20 t-shirt but they charge double for the name and logo.

  • I have been running my Factal designs Define C Mini (3yrs old now) very good case which I got for 100$. But damm that's expensive for 300. But quality-wise these are really good cases.

  • I haven't seen/known many people building Xl size tower systems recently.

Personally I'd go with R6 instead of this behemoth.

    • Only reasons I know of to go with the XL are massive quantities of drives, overkill water cooling or EATX / XL-ATX threadripper builds.

  • Love the build qaulity of my Fractal Design Define R4.

only a complete idiot would spend that much money on this shitbox

  • I bought the fractal Define XL R2 for $199 a year or two ago.
    Can’t complain it’s got 13 3.5” drives.
8 in the bays and another 5 in a triple 5.25” to 5X 3.5” sideways rack.

No fancy LED or anything just some good old quiet fans..
    Rock solid and love it

  • Nice case, but I am partial to fully aluminium cases. I like my cases not to rust in the long term from any nicks and scratches. I'm old school and still have my Inwin steel case and Lian Li full aluminium cases.

  • Got one.
Needed an upgrade from my Corsair 800D.
Now the waiting game on when I can collect this case from MWave.
