New to VPN, Is This Normal?

Just bought a subscription to CyberGhost vpn and this is my first time using VPN. I just have a few issues that I wasn't sure was 'normal'. Using their US Netflix streaming server doesn't work, I get an error message from Netflix when I try to use it and when I do find a server that works, loading an episode or a movie takes a seriously long time and the quality is fluctuates a lot (from okay to horrible) during the movie despite settings. Honestly I don't find the process any easier than using a streaming website. Speed tests come out alright most of the time but using it can be quite bad. It just seems laggy, not slow. Pages will pop up instantaneously but not instant. Sometimes it just drops out in general however sometimes the internet is outright slow.

I know cyberghost isn't the best but from what I read, it's far from the worst. Do Nord or Express solve these issues? Are these issues normal in general?

Thanks

  • How is your normal internet speed? VPN will slow it down inevitably. I recently purchased NordVPN and I am quite happy with the speed and quality across the countries supporting Netflix.

    • around 40 Mbps without VPN. Thanks, might give Nord a try.

  • +2

It's normal to have some VPNs work for you and others don't for a whole variety of factors. That's why they all offer free trials, so try them out and see what works for you. Also note that no VPN is truly 100% safe or secure.

  • VPN.AC one of the best

  • Netflix is become better at blocking VPN gateways. Also the speed is determined by the VPN servers you're passing through, so it seems that service is very slow.

  • Try connecting to the vpn then give speedtest.net a whirl -> you'll know within 30 seconds if the vpn is the issue.

  • I use Nord on my Android TV - Netflix detects it and doesn't run

Might be different watching on a computer though

  • Most major companies that rely on geolocation block VPN IP ranges. It's hard to get around now since most VPNs use a small IP Range.

  • Usually, I did not face any issues. But you can connect to the US proxy and check the speed with fast.com, as it is also hosted by Netflix.
