Can't Send Email from Home Wi-Fi - Sending Okay from Mobile Network

I've had this issue for years now, that I can't send an email (Microsoft Outlook on Windows 10) from my pc or laptop while connected to my home wifi/network.

The issue existed when I was with Optus ADSL, it didn't fix when I moved to Optus NBN and now I'm with iinet NBN at a new address/location. In that time period (about 5 years), I changed router about 3 times too for other reasons, but it didn't address this issue.

The only way I can send an email on Outlook for PC or laptop is to hotspot off my phone using the mobile network (Optus 4G).

Outlook is currently set with POP with outgoing via port 25. All incoming mail is fine.

It's a business email account that someone set up for me years ago on a Yahoo domain (I think).

I had the same issue while travelling overseas too - the hotel wifi couldn't send my business emails, but the international roaming 4G network could have the emails sent. I've tried via VPN too on WiFi to send, but not successful.

Any clarification or avenues to explore would be appreciated. I've googled numerous times for solution but it seems fruitless as issues don't match mine.

EDIT: Thanks all! Changing to port 587 worked a treat

  • Firewall issue? Hmm appears likely not

Have you tried a different device but the same network and email account? You can narrow down the issue by playing with a few variables.

Also, does email send via the webmail interface? If it does, it is likely some setting on your email client.

  • Download and install Em-Client. On their main page, at the bottom, register for the free license.

During installation, skip importing your current mail settings and instead, start new with your email address and password. It'll try every, possible port configuration. If it still cannot connect, poke through the settings as there's a spot which allows you to click a button to "fix" the connection.

Even if it can't connect, I find it's error messages to be more clear/helpful than other mail clients. It may lead to your answer because you can send the error to Em-Client co. and ask their advice.

    Good luck!

Most consumer based ISP have blocked port 25 for SMTP except for when connecting to their own mailserver.

Find out what other ports your company has opened for SMTP and try changing the 25 to that. Or try the other generic ports, 2525 or 587.

If that still doesn't resolve it, you'll need to speak to your company's IT department for further troubleshooting.

  • Most ISPs only let you use their SMTP server if you are coming from one of their connections. Try using iinet's SMTP server mail.iinet.net.au

Outlook is currently set with POP with outgoing via port 25

Try changing it to 465 or 587

  • Not to be pedantic, but POP is only used for retrieving (inbound) email. IF using POP you need to use SMTP for outbound. They are configured separately which is why your inbound is working but not outbound

you're correct - it was port 25 on SMTP outbound. Changing to 587 worked.
