Not a bad price for members.

Lovely dusty autumn leaf spectrum noted in the Cabernet range is prominent in the Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2011 vintage. Very dark plum hue, rich fruit on the nose with cassis, blackberry and tobacco. Very tight structure of acid but fills out beautifully for a juicy fresh finish. Spicy oak rounds out this wine nicely.

Not really a great buy. 2011 was a garbage vintage and back when this vintage was current you could pick it up for around $55 on special.

    • yeah
I remember a few years ago dan gave away a rwt 2011 with 6 bottles of grey label wolf blass

cause that was a bad year
I got around 6 sets lol, still a rwt!

2011 had very heavy rain (3th highest then)

  • I'm salivating just reading about it…but proof is in the taste I suppose.

      Goes well with big mac

  • My understanding was that 2011 vintage of 389 was a good buy because of the Bin 707 relegation

I could be wrong but that was from the tasting notes of that vintage (which could be a marketing thing)

    • It's true that the "better" cabernet went into 389 and 407 that vintage cos no 707
Still probably more of an earlier drinker

    • No 707 made in 2017 either. Fruit was declassified and put into the Bin 407 and possibly the 389 as well.

  • Dan has vintage 2017 now for $85 per bottle. Do you think the 2017 is a better buy ??

      Yes

2017 is a better buy than 2011, but not considered a strong vintage for the wine as it was such a cool year. The 2017 will be softer and more elegant than the big, bold fruit bomb that Penfolds normally delivers. By contrast 2017 was seen as an exceptional year in cooler climates such as the Yarra Valley.

Not a Bargain. 92pts, lowest since 2003 (source The Wine Front). For $80 there are some cracking wines out there, this is not one of them.

    • Even thought this is one of my favourite, but $80 is abit rich. Would rather spend that money on Cooawarra trio.

  • Looks like Aussie produced goods are using USD/RMB as base currency? This wine has sure inflated when measured with foreign AUD.

  • I hope the 2012 was better as have been saving a bottle of that for many years.

  • This has been way overpriced since China got a taste.
