Prefer 512 SSD
USB Type C
Full size keyboard.
Dedicated graphic card is good to have

Thank you.

    Asus G14.

    • Do you have a link? Thank you.

    • I'm looking at this one hard as well but no webcam hmmmm

      Also ASUS has had longevity issues in my experience. I've had much more mileage with Dell but budget is an issue atm during COVID.

      Specs are so good for a 1.6kg frame though!

      Worth waiting for the 2060 variants coming in July? Seems much better than the 1650

      • yeah , no webcam is a little bit of a bummer .

        I can vouch for the small footprint however .

        I'm currently in Thailand , so have access to all variants . Got the model listed @PCCG for around $1900 , could have got the 1660ti model for around $2250 , and then the 2060 for around $2600 I think .

        Guess it depends what you are doing with the machine . I haven't played any games really for the last ten years . Just needed a laptop asap , was waiting for other 4000 series processors to drop , but they were getting delayed and delayed . Guess now I can slowly purr through the last decade of gaming at my leisure .

        I can say that I have tested this model with the Witcher 3 @ Ultra preset 1080p and that with AA off it handles it fine . Moving the AA slider and hairworks slider up starts to slow things a little (more of a console feel) .

        Matte screen is pretty good to my eyes , keyboard is actually very good , track pad is nice as well. Fiingerprint reader is so-so . There is an issue with the new radeon software that isn't letting the 1650 switch off, supposedly it will be fixed soon (there are also workarounds on G14 subreddit).

        Any questions don't hesitate

        • Sounds awesome - enjoy your purchase! G14 is basically almost the perfect laptop for me as well - portability but with option of gaming. The next laptop will be a stop gap for me for a few years until I can get a desktop set up again.

          I'm reading on whirlpool now that people are super keen on the FHD/2060 variant because WQHD has lower brightness (~250nits) to the point where it's a deal breaker for some & Aus is only stocking 2 variants the FHD/1650 or QHD/2060.

          The other issues people have identified are the lack of page up & page down which I used a fair bit (don't need numpad).

          Also are there longevity issues with AMD?

          Alternatively could just order the FHD/2060 from US but local warranty would be important for an Asus.

          And finally, it's always the clash between waiting for new tech vs need for getting it now - people have mentioned microLED screens & much more powerful GPUs in similar small form factors later this year with more Ryzen devices

            @G Wok: Cheers !

            Yes, that's true with the WQHD display, bit of a bummer only two variants in AUS .

            Ah yes , the technological continuum . It seems you can know that you are at the start, or the end of a phase, both of which can be problematic …At some point you have just to bite the bullet and jump in . The other thing is future proofing …do I buy the 2060 version as I may want to play some game that comes out in a few years on high instead of low ? Or will the $700 I saved get me half way to the next thing that will breeze through it on ultra , with half the weight and a 4k screen.

            Who knows :)

            • @flamboyantcircle: lol yep!

              some posts on the current dell deal have mentioned that aside from brightness, QHD itself is not great for productivity they end up having to zoom & scale?

              do you have "Fn pg up & down" on yours?

                • @flamboyantcircle: nice!!! thanks for that. the up & down buttons seem to be for backlighting keyboard with Fn

                  have you owned other Asus laptops in the past? Longevity also seems to be a concern for some

                  • +1

                    @G Wok: I have not .

                    But it's hard to find something that isn't questionable …. I originally ordered a Surface Laptop 3 , then read about screens cracking out of no where, dodgy bluetooth/wifi among other things . Macbook air almost happened , until I read about high temperatures and fan noise due to the fan not being connected to the heat sink. Acer could have been an option but have had issues with those in the past . Was going to wait for the new Lenovo Slim 7 with the Ryzen 4000 series , but early reports are non-existent warranty in Thailand and some pretty bad manufacturing errors in the only batch that is out .

                    No-one seems to have their hands clean, I just got tired of looking for the golden egg. Not having a webcam and rumours about ASUS seemed the least troublesome and concrete out of the lot.

                    • +1

                      @flamboyantcircle: Very fair points

                      I've read the same things about SL3 lol so people have said to wait for the SL4

                      From personal experience, Dell's seem to last the longest (been a while since we've bought one so missed all the coiling/thermal issues).

                      But right now, XPS 15 base models are $2800 for integrated graphics! compared to $1600 several years ago.

                      Maybe I'll take the plunge for G14 & see, because it's so expensive though would want it to last 4-5 years also.

                      • +1

                        @G Wok: Yeah, I was also looking at Dell . To be honest the new xps 13" would have been ideal. Unfortuantely the only model I could find here was a top specked one going @4000AUD. Lots of 2019 models for 3.5k ….crazy !

                        The insspiron 7000 series was also tempting .. but then I was paying more for a much slower cpu , worse keyboard, integrated graphics etc.

                        Anyway, good luck on the search . I'm sure whatever you get will do the job just fine.

                        • @flamboyantcircle: I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the 2060/QHD model as the FHD is not available in Aus.

                          Is the QHD lower brightness screen a big deal breaker you think? All the reviews seem to indicate the 120Hz FHD variant is the one to get

                          • @G Wok: Did you pull it?

                            I guess if your using the laptop inside most of the time the brightness shouldn't be that much of an issue ?
                            Occasionally when I'm with direct sunlight I wish for a little more brightness , but to be honest that's hard to avoid with most screens.

                            • @flamboyantcircle: Hey buddy, I got side tracked by Aftershock & metabox instead which are similarly slim, upgradeable and have webcams etc.
                              Reports are pretty good for metabox, cheaper feel but rebranded clevo/tongfang chassis.

                              Waiting for EOFY sales to decide lol

    Definitely not Apple

    • Why not? They hold their value quite well.

  • Oops. Forgot I need a full size keyboard.

  • am also after similar specs so am interested to follow what people can suggest. I am after a 15.6 inch touch screen.
