Sell or Repair 2013 MacBook Pro?

Got a Macbook with fan noise whirling loud. Wonder I should spend the money repairing it for longer use or just sell it? Macbook Pro 15 inch 2013 model

Flip a coin if you really can't make a basic decision yourself.

    • Must be your day today. I had mine with Pam's thread yesterday. OP needs to find out the cost of repair first then weigh that up with cost of a new one. It's probably going to cost alot to repair and maybe even not possible as so old. IMO. Start looking for a new one.

Would it hurt to give it to a tech savvy mate with a gift card attached, for them to open up and clean the dust out of it, and replace the thermal paste? Fans on ebay don't look too expensive if they need replacement. (e.g. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/263654583270)

IMHO it's worth repairing if there's nothing else wrong with it? It's an easy job, 30 mins absolutely tops. I could do it in about 15 mins comfortably.

    • 100% agree, but I suspect this might be like my spouse not getting around to getting a new battery for her phone so she can mention how terrible it is daily until she buys a brand new phone “because she needs a reliable phone”.

In any case, I am pretty sure this model just has small Phillips screws holding the base panel on, so would be very quick and easy to inspect.

      • Um no, these Macbook Pros all have Torx screws. OP might need multiple sized torx screwdrivers as replacing the fan may require removing various sized screws.

        • My model is 2012 and has Phillips, hence the “I am pretty sure”.
But any of the $5 bit drivers that come up on here regularly will have torx bits. Worth taking a look as it may just require cleaning.

          • @mskeggs: I see, my Late 2013 has Torx screws. I agree that OP should just open it first, could be the best bang for his buck option.

    wd40

  • Earplugs/noise cancelling headphones

    • White Noise Generator.

  • I had similar problem recently with a different type of laptop. Spoke to local repair dude and asked for a quote saying I am not willing to pay more than $50 just in case he went over the budget (I had already moved on to a newer laptop). He charged $25 for the quote and it was unfixable…only good for parts maybe. At least I know and can be reassured it goes to recycleland :)

  • So does it sound like the fan is starting to die? You could replace it yourself following this ifixit guide. It doesn't seem to be too hard, and would be better bang for your buck (if you have to buy a new Mac or something).
