I'm moving interstate for a job and will be leaving my PS4 behind :(
Really excited for The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima and was wondering if I can still play them at launch with Remote Play. I'll be bringing my Dualshock controller anyway to use as a gamepad.
Anyone done something like this? How feasible is it? Can you browse the store and make digital purchases? Can you turn the console on and off? What's the gameplay like – resolution, picture quality, lag etc? How likely am I to encounter an issue that can't be solved without physical access to the console?

I’m guessing it’s the lack of a TV wherever they’re going, rather than inability to carry the PS4. I agree that it probably won’t be a pleasant experience.
Hmm, I went to uni interstate and never thought of doing that (figured I'd be playing games more during holidays and not when I should be studying lol). Its kinda chunky but I suppose an extra 4 kg on top of carrying a laptop is doable. Probably should be prioritising essential items I need to live on my own for the foreseeable future though. Also worried about it getting damaged. I've got an Xbox One and gaming PC too… can't take everything!
I use a travel backpack that is large enough for a 17" laptop, though I don't have a laptop. It still fits under an airline seat, would fit a PS4 with a laptop, and if your carry-on is taking damage, it's probably the least of your worries.
I thought remote play can only be done on the same wifi network, not 100% certain though
I've used remote play over internet to play PS4 on my laptop when at my folks place. It's definitely doable- just gotta make sure ports are forwarded/open.
I have set this up myself with Steam link and PS4 remote play but the problem is turning on the host device on directly if you can wake up your PC remotely that's the hardest part done as you can install ps4 remote play linked with your ps4 on your pc and then remotely access your pc to wake the ps4 in the same home network.
From there my Steam is set up to start up on boot within Windows and i can access my game library via Steam Link on Android or iOS but for the PS4 or Xbox One controller to work natively you would need Android 10 or iOS 13.
To get PS4 remote play working remotely you would want to put your PS4 on rest mode not off, then you start the PS4 remote play application and it will wake up the PS4 from rest mode and then you can use Android or iOS PS4 remote play app to remotely access your ps4.
Your home internet connection must have a decent upload speed i think 20mpbs or better is ideal.
You will also need your client device Android or iOS to be connected to a fast reliable fixed or mobile Wi-Fi connection which i think the PS4 remote play app requires and/or the Steam link too it will not work if you are on a cellular connection.
My use case is my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Wi-Fi on Android 10 paired with PS4 controller that covers both PS4 and Steam link controller requirements and using Telstra 4G on a Nighthawk M1 4G mobile router to serve the Wi-Fi to my devices, but if i know the location i am at has a fixed fast connection capable of up to 50mpbs download speed then i will use that instead.
You will need:
A low latency connection
uPNP TESTED AND WORKING on your console's end. Test this - tether your phone to your laptop or whatever and see if you can turn your console on or off and stream from it.
As to problems you can't recover from - yeah, not much you can do if it decides the hard drive needs to be re-checked, but it's been pretty reliable in my experience. That said, as I'm writing this, it's asking me to manually register the PS4, which must be done while you're still at your place.
I've RemotePlay'd via my laptop and PlayStation Vita while interstate.
I haven't tried my phone/tablet yet though!I'm a TPG FTTB connection, and I can't wait to be able to tether on a 5G connection!
No idea if it's something I'm doing wrong, but remote play is useless and laggy even when I use it at home on the same network so I don't see how this would be possible.
It sounds terribly frustrating. Surely a PS4 could fit in your carry on?
