Rate My Future PC Build Please

Hi,

I'm thinking of building a desktop with the following:
-GPU: GTX 1660Ti
- CPU: Ryzen 3700x
-RAM:Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3200
-PSU: Corsair RMX Series
- Case: was going to get Cooler Master Silencio S400 but someone mentioned this was a miniATX and the MOBO is an ATX so considering be quiet! Dark Base 700
- Mobo: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX
- monitor: BenQ PD2500Q
- storage: Samsung ssd 860 evo 500gb plus plan on buying HDD as well and maybe Samsung m2?

This is just done through reading online articles. I will primarily use desktop for using graphics type programs like Adobe so no gaming.

Not sure about sound card, CPU cooler or WiFi card?

So far it looks like the total will be around $2100 if I buy everything on sale. It was this or get a Dell XPS 15 :)

Any suggestions or critiques wld be appreciated :)

    Consider:
    * 32GB (2 x 16GB) sticks, allowing you to upgrade to 64GB at a later date. Photoshop will eat RAM if you have multiple projects on the go.
    * 1 x Samsung 970 Evo+ 1TB NVMe m.2. Your choice of motherboard has only 1 m.2 slot, so get the highest capacity that you can afford now. You can use 2.5" SSDs as scratch disks later if you find it's needed.
    * A mechanical drive of however many TB you require for storing your work.
    * As far as I can see, your choice of motherboard is ATX, but your chosen case is mATX and thus too small for that board.
    * I've no experience with designer-grade monitors, but the 27" is not too much more expensive than the 25".
    * CPU and GPU is a great choice

    • Thanks so much for this, I really appreciate it

-I read a lot about RAM because of the purpose of this build but ultimately decided that 16GB was enough. Do you have personal experience with how many photoshop projects 32GB of RAM will handle? Also, I can just upgrade my 16GB to 32GB later on right?
      - how do i use the SSD as a scratch disc?
      - thanks for the tip on storage and pick up on the case. I had another look and was going to go with be quiet! Dark Base 700 but it seems that I have more to consider =/
      - re: monitor - i was trying to keep costs down so just decided to go with 25" as a bigger screen isn't that big of a deal to me.

i dont know if this is a good build or whatever, seems fine
but $2100? you could get this laptop for $1600 which is pretty similar

desktop should be much cheaper, unless something youve specified is especially better in some way

    • CPU is significantly weaker on the laptop, plus it would be running RAM in single channel as it's a single stick. Also, OP wants more than a single SSD drive for storage, and while I can't say for certain, the monitor is likely much better in quality than the laptop screen (it's also larger with a higher resolution)

      • Yea the specs aren't exactly the same, that wasn't the point. The point was that it might not be the best value, illustrated by the availability of a similarly specced laptop for $500 less. Which could then be used to upgrade everything you mentioned except the cpu. Or you know, get a cheaper desktop.

Unless OP would prefer each part is high quality, and isn't too concerned about value on this bargain website.

        • hey yeah the specs are not the same - I was getting lazy with building a desktop and accumulating parts and also not sure how long my current laptop will last for me to do this so I was going to just buy a laptop when it was on sale haha

    • thanks for this, not that i have much experience but some of the specs don't seem enough for me =/

      • Fair enough, but you can use it as a base, you can also modify it using their system builder, which will also let you know if the parts you have selected are incompatible.

        • oh i didn't know about this, will look further into it :) i was gonna manually do this, but this site might be more efficient

        • actually i just used it to modify the parts and it doesn't seem to have the tomahawk mobo that i had listed because all the ones listed were mini ATX or iTX :/ i couldn't find any other names that it went by either

  • No need for soundcard.

Stock cooler with ryzen is great for cooling but can get noisy. (Noise reduction would be main reason to go with non-stock fan or AIO)

I think with the MOBO you will need to either get a wifi card or dongle if you need wifi. (Others may be able to recommend B450 boards with wifi)

Overall your specs are great. What kind of graphics work will you be doing?

    • so i see that sound card should be built into the MOBO - if in the future, i need it for whatever reason, can i just install it easily or is it complicated?

Ok i'll do some research for wifi card with the MOBO i want

thanks for the confidence :) graphics work will mostly involve photoshop, indesign and illustrator work

I would get a 1660 super over a ti, the performance gain vs price difference isnt worth it.

its about $80 more for 1-3% increased performance.

  • I'd upgrade the cooler. The stock cooler is functional but is very loud. Grab a Hyper 212X or EVO and enjoy silence. This is what I did with my 3800X

    • thanks, how do I know if these will fit into the case? Maybe I'm getting this confused but how is this different to the fans built into the PC case?

      • Edit: Just a warning on my original advice, I think the 212X doesn't have AM4 support and you've actually got to get the LED version to get AM4 support.

If you look up any case spec on the manufacturers website it'll usually give you the CPU clearance. E.g https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/cases/mini-tower/silenc… so 166mm for the S400. If your chosen CPU cooler has less height than this you'll be fine.

The stock AMD cooler is a 90mm (from memory) fan without a large radiator / heatpipe arrangement. The fan has to run at very high RPM to get decent results and so is loud. The 212 has a 120mm fan, with bigger radiator and heatpipes so you can get by with slower RPM = less noise.

        • thanks for this again, it made a lot of sense
I found this site for AM4 support https://landing.coolermaster.com/pages/amd-am4-ryzen-compata…
So after googling it seems that with the Hyper 212 LED Turbo, you can't turn off LED unless you cut off the wire to the LED which I rather not. I don't care for LED or RGB lighting etc. but if I have no choice, I'll leave it. However, just wondering does having these light embellishments actually negatively affect anything e.g. my power bill?
