What’s the serial number on it?
ST8000DM004.
Same as the one listed in the above in the product description
How many screws hold the platter on.
Lol to answer that you need to pull it apart.
3 each side to mount it. Youtube it to see the internals
:) I want to see in yours, it might be different.
@Slippery Fish: turns out its solid gold!!
@DarthAntz: :o
Dont do what I did and overfill it causing the lid to pop off.
Ill put it in the freezer because cold temperatures naturally compress files, resulting in more disc space.
Understandble price due to Covid-19 and the dollar dropping. Just thought I'd mention for anyone interested, this has been priced at $210.84 before. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514221
Yeah I paid this much for an Ironwolf
It was $245 2 weeks ago. Prices are up and down.
I have been looking for a decently priced 8TB NAS drive for months. I suppose this isn’t suitable?
I would hold out for a good deal on some Ironwolf drives (might take a while for them to come back down to a reasonable price though).
Try the 8TB WD Elements from Amazon. About the same price as this Seagate for a rebadged red. You will need to shuck it yourself.
because of the serial number and hype around SMR drives, its not suitable for NAS. although the SMR issue is supposedly worse for everything below 8TB. Get a better drive than this for NAS.
What's warranty going to be like for Amazon?
Send back at our own costs?These use SMR so they would not be recommended for NAS use.
I'd not recommend SMR drives for general use, not only the NAS case. SMR drives are not so much cheaper, IMHO not worth bying.
not a NAS rated tho
Yeah but I just needed a new HDD to store my steam library when I am not playing the games. So this should be great for me.
I've had 4 seagate XT die on me in a NAS setup
Fair point, but this is just sitting inside my pc.
Actually because I found the following I cancelled the order and ordered this Instead for $129

@The mikky: Off topic:
Would a Surveillance HDD be good for a PVR? I do a lot of recording.@StingyBritches: No idea but to be honest that sounds exactly like a surveillance system (but just recording your tv, not a camera) to me so probably would be a very good choice for a PVR. But do some google searches that might get you more detailed information.
@The mikky: Thanks. It appears WD AV-GP drives are the go for a PVR.
@StingyBritches: Yes. Assuming you're not too precious about it.
Surveilance drives will skip error correction and CRC, if their write buffer fills. Its a firmware thing.
Basically, its a really smart decision to know most security companies would be OK with a frame or two of corruption, to save the rest of the stream, so it just keeps writing, no matter what.
If you were storing data files, those error bits could corrupt your work, so you don't want that.
Video though? Should be sweet.
@MasterScythe: Fair point and of course if you care about the data at all store it on multiple mediums in multiple locations.
@The mikky: Yep
I run a 5 drive ZFS RaidZ2, with an external drive mirroring it, in a fireproof safe.
@MasterScythe: But what if the safe blows up ? :p
The only prob with the AV-GP is the price. FYI: I've been running a WD Green in my PVR for years, but it does get hot.
MasterScythe: Yep. I hear you! Besides, nothing I record is archival.
In pvrs it could even be a benefit.
Lots, if not all of them are underpwoered and don't handle write errors or throughput pauses well, Id actually wager that the drive firmware always reporting 'good' would have a very positive impact on a PVR.
This is down to $250 now.
I just bought one of these last week, and have already filled it 15%. AMA
