So I want to change telcos ASAP.
Signing up, they usually mail you a sim. I’m wondering if it’s possible I buy a SIM card from 7-eleven or Coles or whatever and have my number ported over to that, and then activate the plan I want on that sim.
Any ideas?

Question for the SIM porting experts, can we port a number to a $2 SIM card just for receiving SMS only, without activating a plan and paying a monthly bill? Will that $2 SIM used to receive SMS ever expire? Thanks.
Depends on the telco, but 99% of the time they force you to buy a plan to activate the card.
I would buy an Aldi starter pack for that purpose and activate it on the Pay As You Go plan. It's $5 in store or delivered if you order it online.
It will last for 365 days without recharging and the $5 can be used for calls or sms. Prob best to turn off data so it doesn't chew through the $5.
Kogan SIM in 7 Eleven works like that.
