Could Anyone Recommend Where to Buy a Feasible Basic Level Treadmill That Doesn't Break The Bank?

Just in the market for an electric treadmill that has basic functions. Purpose is to light jog/walk on rainy/winter days and if possible train the dog to use it too!

At the same time does not want to spend a fortune knowing it could be a seasonal thing (eventually a clothes rack, who knows!).

Anyone has any experience who could direct towards a product that tick the boxes? Noticed Kogan has few models around $500 mark, wonder if they are durable for what it is

This is largely state-dependent, as you'll have a range of entry-level treadmills sold by your local fitness equipment chains that'll probably be under $1,000 dollars and those would be good enough for the usage you're describing.

As an example, here in WA, Orbit Fitness sell their own line of in-house treadmills which start at $900. You can get that one delivered for $75 to most states.

I have an older generation model of that Starstrider line that's probably over 10 years old now and it still works a treat. I use it in much the same way you describe, as a substitute for jogging in winter. All it's needed in terms of maintenance is some occasional silicone lubricant for the running belt.

It can do a maximum of 12km/h which is honestly more than enough, has 3 incline levels, can support a maximum user weight of 100kg and the contact heart rate sensors on the handle bars are actually quite accurate. It folds up into a fairly small footprint for storage as well.

The only downside I've found is that compared to the high-end, commercial-grade gym treadmills, the running track is narrower and that does force you to focus on maintaining accurate foot placement, as you can't really run with the kind of "looser"/relaxed gait as you would outdoors, because your feet will keep hitting the plastic side rails/foot rests.

    • Thanks for the info. I've noticed the running track seem to be narrower on these models. Hope this is something you could get used to with overtime use?

    • Hi, can I ask what silicone lubricant you opted for? I'm in need of some for the second hand treadmill I purchased.

    • Thanks, assuming this is a trusted site?

      • It is. Have bought a few things in the past like shoe racks and trampoline. Infact Shoe rack I even went to pick up from Braeside in Melbourne.

i'd imagine when gyms re-open, front lawns will be littered with treadmills around the suburbs

    • front lawns will be littered with treadmills around the suburbs

Will be a sea change from toilet paper.

    • haha good point. But how much would you trust them units for functioning properly! Don't wanna find out the hard way

      • If it fails then put in back where you found it.

Any faults will be from where/how it's been stored for the last 10 years after the owner used it twice - dust, rust, etc

I got mine from council clean-up, it was actually faulty. Ran but made a grinding noise. Turned out a magnet had come loose in the motor, epoxied it back on and it's been running for over 6 years now. Was a $1500 model when new.

Maybe keep an eye on auction sites, including Grays Online.
There may be some equipment suppliers and/or gyms that don't make it through the shutdown.

I'm sure there's plenty of people who have shelled out on nice equipment out of guilt who have barely used it and will part with it for well below market value to get rid of the reminder of their failure.

I would recommend Facebook marketplace, where I got mine at a steep discount.

Yep, my fried had a good one which sat in the study, unused.
I bought it off him and it sat in my study, unused.
      It's now at my in-laws place… unused.

      • Destined for the landfill… unused.

        The circle of life.

  • I am a cheapskate, I go out and exercise for free.

If you don't want that, kerbside collections always have a treadmill.

There are many people who buy treadmills with the best intentions and just turn it into a white elephant.

    • Agree. Won't rule myself out of ending up like one. Hence looking for some opinions. Also hoping to rely on dog being a user as last resort! Only that I can't bring myself to trust a kerbside gem to perform well.

    • True for some, but I have an elliptical which I use at least 3x/ week. I love it as I can watch shows on iview, Netflix etc whilst I exercise. I’ve heard similar from others. But totally agree, there’s a lot that go unused. I don’t think he ones on the side of the road are going to be high quality but there’d be some good bargains on marketplace.

  • it's called the footpath

Go to rebel or another sports equipment retailer and find the good brands/models with the features you want then search specifically for these brands on marketplace- that’s how I got my elliptical which I use heaps and have done for at least 5 years. Only looking to possibly upgrade now that I know I’ll use it. You could also look out for when Aldi does it as a special buy and if there’s an issue return based on their satisfaction guarantee.
