75" LED TV Recommendation ($2200 Budget)

Hi All

I have gone through several of the forum topics on this matter but there doesnt appear to be a clear winner. I'm looking for recommendations on a 75" LED TV within a budget of approx $2200. Some of the models i have been considering are:
- Sony KD75X8000G
- Hisense R7 or R8
- Samsung RU8000 or TU8000 (i presume 2020 model)
- TCL C8

Appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks

  • So what are you leaning towards and why OP?

    • The Sony. Mainly due to Android TV and general opinion that these are superior & more reliable compared to TCL/Hisense. But they are all reasonably close when it comes to pricing and i dont claim to be an expert when it comes to TVs hence the post. I have observed that the Sony does not get discounted as often/much as the others though

You need to read up on the Sony to see if the implementation of Android TV is rock solid in this unit. No point getting Android TV if it is laggy. I have an LG OLED and a Nvidia shield for the Android TV but ended up packing that away as the LG OS ended up being pretty good (although some of the Aussie apps like iview don't have the best implementation compared to Android TV). But I mainly use YouTube, Netflix, Stan, prime, Apple TV+ and USB and they are all good implementations on the LG.

I think something to keep in mind is that Android TV is still in it's infancy and it's really only become widely implemented in the last 2 years or so. With the number of manufacturers that are on board with it now I reckon it will evolve and improve quickly. So I personally wouldn't be too stressed about it's performance right now.

For the full Android TV experience you can only get it on Sony and TCL can't you?

I'm in a similar boat. I've narrowed it down to the Samsung series 8 or the sony. They're pretty similar so i think i need to go and look at both in the flesh next. You'll be able to get the Samsung for about $1900 of you have access to the Samsung education store or the good guys commercial.

The TCLs apparently aren't great for gaming and i still have quality concerns with the Hisense.

    • Yes i havent had the chance to go and view them all in the flesh properly. Seems like most people have the same opinion as TCL & Hisense seem to have some unknowns about them. Their warranties are much longer though - thats primarily the factor that adds them to the mix. Also there are heaps of 'refurb' TCL/Hisense on FB Marketplace which again raises some eyebrows for me. Thanks for the tip on the Samsung discount!

I bought a 2020 LG UN8100 75inch UHD tv from harvey norman 2k inc delivery. Its all been set up and looks really sharp. Has 100hz IPS panel, quad core processor, 4k upskaling, magic remote and a smooth OS. Obviously its not the same clarity as the Nanocell or the Samsung QLED which you will need to fork out another 1k for 75". Hope it helps.

    • Also to add..I have seen the Samsung TU8000 in the store. Although it looks sleek compared to LG UN8100, the panel appears to be grainy when viewed from the sides. It also sounded a but low and tinny compared to the LG. I have read reviews that the OS could be a big laggy. The LGs OS and remote operation is just flawless.

I am using mine mainly for movies and PS4 gaming and I find it really nice and sharp. Mine is in the main family area and well lit. Good luck with your choice.

      • Thanks. I havent considered the 2019 LG models as they dont seem to come up in discussions as much as the others do but this is one to possibly consider.

Seems like you got a good deal with the price, was it on sale when you bought it? I see in general they are about $2300 now excl delivery.

Do you find that the lack of Android TV to be a negative? I'm not a power user but i assume that Android TV is the benchmark.

  • What are you using it for - what do you normally watch, gaming etc?
And what kind of room, bright/dark etc?

    • Mainly HD movies (or 4K if i can get them), Netflix & Freeview TV (only sometimes). Will be in my lounge which is well lit

Sony and Samsung always way ahead of the rest

The others are only considered if for less money (budgetary contraints)
    Dont get me wrong.
Hisense and TCL are also good TVs but are definitely 2nd tier compared with the clear leaders.

I have a Samsung 65" 4K TV and its awesome - colour perfect, sound is great.

I also have a 47" TCL which is good but not up there with the Samsung.
In fact I also have a cheap 50" Skyworth TV that has a much better picture than the TCL (almost as good as the Samsung) though definitely not better sound.

My bro has a 65" 4K Sony and its awesome too.

So I speak both from long term experience and from market knowledge.

Let me add that Samsung has a very distinct advantage with thier remotes in that almost any Samsung remote will operate almost every Samsung TV.
So if you lose your Samsung remote you will always find one that suits on eBay for $6 to $8 delivered….comforting to know

    • Thanks. After reading this and others I am of the same opinion that it has to be Sony/Samsung and maybe the LG that was mentioned above.
