TV Pricing in Australia

Regarding 55" OLED TVs

I moved from the UK to Australia a few months ago and am looking for a TV.

I was waiting for the 2020 Panasonic range to come out and then learned that Panasonic is not selling TVs in Australia anyone.

I then turned my attention to the Sony A8G which was at $2800, but has now gone up to $3200 everywhere.
I know the LG C9 is being advertised at $2500, but I'm not keen on the LG.

What I'm finding weird is that all the retailers change their prices together, even when the TV was on clearance for a couple of weeks and then went off clearance and up in price.

Anyway now I'm waiting to see if the price goes back down to pull the trigger.
I realise that with Covid and lack of stock coming in and people buying more TVs prices are higher this year. I'm in no hurry so I'm willing to wait until Christmas if I have to and buy the A8H once its gone down in price.

Any suggestions?

Wait until the price comes down to a level you are willing to pay, or wait until you can no longer stand not having a TV, whichever happens earlier.

    • yeah thats the plan. I'm fine to wait till the end of the year even if I end up paying the same.

  • The Sony is available @ $2780+Freight if you can live with Open Box.

    • does open box mean ex display?

      • Or it could be a change of mind return. But you don't know how long it's been used for either way.

Videopro, used to be the Sony Factory seconds outlet (scratch/dent/boxes with shipping damage etc), however Sony now do that themselves through Ebay. This changed before the OLEDs came out, so the open box happened after leaving Sony.

  • Prices fluctuate here a lot and discount offers are generally real discounts (except when they price jack). There's a strong culture here of cross-shopping, price matching and haggling in-store which we're not used to at all.

We pretty much go to Currys/PCWorld, cross-check with Amazon and order cheapest one. If feeling fancy, pay RRP at John Lewis for 2 year warranty. Discounts in UK aren't great except for occasional clearance.

Here prices go up and down very often for everything. Monitor Coles prices for your daily stuff, everything's on sale every other week alternating ('ish).

    • Yeah in the UK I'd go to richersounds amazing JL and curry's and get the best deal and be pretty sure that if the price went down further they'd give me the difference back. But also prices wouldn't be matched up if one of those decided to put the price back up.

      • I find 20% VAT amazing too. I was expecting when UK was mentioned to point out how much more expensive TVs are here (not).

Anyways back to main point. Wait until you are willing to pay otherwise look at a cheaper price bracket.

  • what about hisense oled

    • Nah if I'm buying an expensive TV I want good processing and the hisense is not great.

  • Check into a few CC's that have price drop protection if you're worried about that happening. I don't have any personal experience as I've never used it, but I hear the coles mastercard has a pretty solid policy.

    • I didnt even know that was a thing, I'll look into it.
