Are Group Buys a Thing Anymore? LG CX 65

I was part of a group buy about 10 ish years ago now where we managed to get a LCD TV for well under what anyone could negotiate but looking at the threads here, it is looking like it is not a thing anymore. There is one there from 2017 for a LG OLED but nothing came of it. Interested on peoples thoughts.

  • Hi, DTV Forum used to try to organise Group Buys, but it is gone…

  • I'm intrigued. How does it work?

    • Well, that is the problem. It either does or it doesn't.
It is like trying to herd cats…
There needs to be a stand out product that everyone wants.
Someone that is prepared to "do a deal"
Someone to gather the funds, manage the trauma and distribute product.

      • so basically a one-off distribution operation, including sourcing from the manufacturer or some retailer/distributor that's willing to offer a bulk purchase discount?

That sounds….difficult. As in, 'not worth it for the organiser' level difficult. Unless they skim profit off each unit.

        • Yes. For any number of reasons.
Often stock was in one place, so Freight and Insurance added a lot particularly if bulky, or when people lived in remote places… I don't think the organiser had an Insurable Interest in the item…

Also, the sort of quantities would often be quite high to qualify and people were flaky. This happened a lot on pre-release products. Peoples interest changed, sometimes they caved and bought something else while waiting.

          I like the idea though.

          • @holdenmg: yeah but in effect the organiser is doing for that product what a retailer does for each of its products - source at a decent price and hopefully sell all units to members of the public. Except they're doing it without the resources/protections a business has.

            Actually they're effectively doing a groupon/cudo/<insert_groupbuy_businessname_here>

  • That is right, needs to be a good amount of people who would commit and a supplier who will sell them at a very low price. I asked the supplier when I picked up my TV how much he is making and he said it is actually costing him $50 for each TV he was selling in the groupbuy but the store had a deal with Sony where they get a free TV for every 9 they sell which was enabling him to do it.

  • It could work if the retailer is willing to deliver as part of the cost.

I'm in the market for a cx65, but I was going to wait for eofy sales. If you get some traction I would be interested.

    • I was waiting for eofy deals on this tv too, did not come across any…..
Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Fingers crossed…

  • I still find great deals on Automatic watches on Drop.com
