Great Barrier Reef - December 2011 - Deals and general tips?

Planning to go to GBR around 20-23rd december and haven't planned anything yet. Anyone got any places to get a good deal for 3 adults and 1 kid. Duration doesn't have to be long, like maybe 3-7 days long, unless it's better to stay longer.

For anyone who's gone on a trip, what's the sort of budget I would be looking for, say around $3000 any good. And yes I'm a cheap-ass as well

    I'm not sure about the budget point, but if you're going to for cheap, there is heaps of accommodation in Cairns. It's cheaper to stay there than say Port Douglas or one of the islands, noting that you will also need to get flights there or make your way there from Cairns.
