Share Your Price Matching Experiences

If you're on ozbargain, chances are you've price matched ;)

Was wondering how everyones price matching experiences were (at any store?)

To get the ball rolling:

Bunnings: Hands down the worst experiences ever. All staff treated me as if I was the scum of the earth and did everything they could to make me pay full price. Multiple times. Multiple stores. I got my price matches though so :)

MyCar (formerly Kmart Tyre and Auto): Outstanding service, beats prices in 1 min with a smile (well if you could smile over the phone). But only beats tyres by $1, consolation they match deals eg free wheel alignment. But i live 5 mins away from them so xD

Appliances Online: Generally good, but I had one experience with a Sony TV that all major retailers were doing a pissing contest with to see who could sell it the lowest. Appliance online consultant (sounded like a big boss) "The price is too low, can't match it." WTF?

Officeworks: Great. As long as you follow their conditions, they won't make you wait too long and will give you that solid 5% discount, and won't treat you like the scum of the earth. In fact had an employee congratulate me "Awesome price, dude".

Chemist Warehouse: I learnt the hard way. They beat 5% of the difference of the price. So say if they sell product A for $1 and another chemist sells it for $0.95, they will beat it by 5% x ($1 - 0.95) so 0.25c. so you end up paying $0.9475c. Oh and to top it off the other store has to be a chemist, can't be woolies eg I tried to price match a sorbolene product from woolies to chemist warehouse.

Disclaimer: I was respectful at all times when price matching (it goes a long way, even though its the store's goddamn policy, some even go to the extent where they will 'enthusiastically price match':P)

Love to hear your experiences/war stories/venting/etc

I have never price matched and dislike the haggling culture here. Purchase from and reward the store that offers you the best price already that meets your requirement.

A true ozbargainer will try to get the better price than the best price available

Different ozbargainers exist beyond the circlejerk.

a true ozbargainer might think about posting more than 1 deal in their 3 years ;)

@Hybrid - Sometimes the cheapest store isn’t near you, or they could be out of stock.

    went to JBHiFi
ME: hello sir, can I price match this item with (showing my phone)
JB: (saw the price for half second only) oh man, sorry that is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy below our cost price……..

    • Yea i've price matched at Jb Hi fi, it was a so so experience. I got my price match, but took forever. At least staff were friendly

I had JB price match some earphones for me. Showed the price, yep no probs, wrote up a quote thingy to take to the counter. Took like a minute and guy was super helpful. Guess it depends on the staff, which is probably true anywhere. Though I generally find the younger staff are easier going with it.

        • Mine took 15mins, due to the manager. But she was ok, just ticking all the boxes

My match was the Good guys Google Nest Hub Max $129, went over to JB at 930 with printed info in hand with website up on phone, showed him what i was after, he looked it up and 5min later i was out the door with my GNHMax on hand.

Another with JB is when Amazon had the $10 or $12 Philips Hue Ambiance globes and super cheap hub. Did the same thing and walked out with 2 and the hub as well

I tried to price match s10e. Went to three separate JB-HIFI stores in the city, no1 would price match at $800. A couple of weeks later… Black Friday the phone is $750 everywhere. I price matched online at Amino Z, not sure if that counts

I never trusted sites like BYO jet etc, so I would price match with Flight Centre and get credit card fees waived too. Now (well pre covid) they will only match prices on the direct airlines site so I never bothered with them anymore.

I was looking up a monitor while in-store at Office Works and the first result on Google was from JB Hi-Fi's website which was $100 cheaper, I asked if they could price match and showed them the phone and they beat it by 5% - all because they didn't list the specifications in-store!

I find that it doesn’t depends on the store, but the person you’re speaking with.
Eg. One Jb hi fi happily price matched Officeworks on an iPhone while another claimed OW sell grey imports.
One Chemist Warehouse quickly approved the price match against Woolworths while the other insisted they call to confirm stock and price, despite clearly listed online. Another just straight up told me they only match other pharmacies.

    • So true👍

Whats the point of price matching?

      1. For the 5% or 10% price beat savings
      2. Using discounted gift card to further savings
      3. Get better after sales service/ warranty from a physical retail store rather than some unknown online store
      4. Convenient - the store might be closer or have it in stock
      • What he said👌

Haven't had any troubles price matching at JB Hi-Fi against Amazon and David Jones (against anyone who had it advertised cheaper like Peter's of Kensington)

That being said, when I worked for DJs and I was bored/work was slow/they were nice to me, I'd help customers find a better price to price match by helping them with their research if they asked if we could do it cheaper

  • JBHIFI awsome got 500 off and a not so happy manager because staff member price matched a Samsung TV. I took 500 off the lowest price I had ever seen on a new released model and gave it a go. No proof required but there is a good guys and Harvey Norman within 100metres of this place.

  • Officeworks is pretty good with price match as long as it matches their T&C. They dont really care about selling below cost price unlike JB Hi-Fi "Cant sell below our cost price" crap.
With being said that, they do check everything like "identical stock" including delivery cost and such.

  • I did a SCA price match a couple of days ago. Item at SCA was $159.99 on the shelf tag and listed as "Clearance" for $99.99 on their website. But I found it on Amazon for $59.99.

Friendly SCA manager did their own check on Amazon (I didn't have to show them my phone) and I was half-expecting a spiel about it being below their cost price, but that didn't happen. I was out the door in 5 minutes. $100 off their shelf price!

  • I don’t price match at stores that have a “only if the shop is in the same area” policy or the “we only price match against stores X, Y and Z.”

I usually just give my business to who ever offers the best deal. Unless I can pick up points on a particular loyalty card, then price matching is a mugs game, it’s all about the price beat…

  • Recent product purchase:

Original price of $48 at Officeworks.

    Mwave had it for $28.

    Officeworks price match/beat it:)
