Using PayPal for Private Mobile Phone Sale

I'm looking to sell a Samsung phone at $950 and live in WA.

A buyer would like to cover postage and have it sent to Victoria and pay via PayPal.

I've sold using PayPal before for smaller values (up to $200), but I'm not sure what the risk is in the event of a scam (buyer reports faulty item when it's perfectly fine).

Can anyone provide their own experiences in this sort of a situation as I'm happy to do it if the risk is low or if I can still have my money by way of PayPal fee.

Cash in hand or if you must bank transfer.

    Don't use Paypal.

just..No. (Where is the facepalm emoji when you need it!)

OP, you're not new here, surely this is a known by now?

bank transfer, showing cleared funds in your account around 2 days after (not via screenshot from buer), to a known address, send it tracked. Otherwise, face to face and cash.

And make sure you document everything (like the imei on the actual device)

      • I do that for all electricals, find the serial and video me holding it/demo'ing it working (eBay) or any marks ect to show condition. Good advice

I've seen a lot of threads like this that go bad, the buyer disputes paypal saying it isn't as described and get there money back and keep the phone or send back a different one.

Bank Transfer would be the safest bet if you do decided to send it.

THEY WILL 1000% DO A CHARGEBACK
    CASH ONLY
    DO NOT GET TEMPTED

    • Edit: wrong advice here. Apologies.

If they paid via family and friends, to my knowledge, they cannot ask for a refund from PayPal.

However if they paid via a PayPal checkout (like ebay), then they can get the money back.

The only scam that I've seen, is that they will send a fake email with PayPal email template, to make you think they have paid (but they havent).

If you want to go through with it, wait until you actually see payment in your PayPal account (please do not click the email links).

    Tbh though, cash is best.

The same scan method can be used for bank transfers. They'll send a fake email with the banks' details.

credit card chargeback is still possible.

I'm aware of this one and wouldn't be fooled.

My concern is charge back abuse as brokenglish mentioned

      • Sorry was just doing more reading to be 100% sure.

So PayPal will not refund the money back. BUT their bank can. The buyer will ask their bank for some bs reason, then chargeback the money.

Paypal will then be in the negative and MAY take the money back from you.

I'm saying may, because technically you weren't selling anything so you shouldn't be liable. BUT this is all risky could be should be. So don't do it.

happened to me, i wasn't even selling anything. charge back is via their bank, and paypal has no recourse, they just take it out of your account.

Your phone isn't special, it would also be available in Victoria for similar money.

Why would you even entertain the idea?!

  • COD or Direct deposit.

I have offered COD before if I think they are dodgy. That way, you can put all the postage fees onto them as well and they don't get the product at the other end unless they pay for it. Aus Post then pays you. If they do a charge back, it comes off Aus Post tab, not yours.

  • sigh. just move on.

But it's so tempting - 950 dollaridoos for your second-hand phone. How could you resist? You could use that money to help buy your next $2000 phone. Go on, live a little. Take the chance. Feel the rush of adrenaline as you post your disposable shiny object in the mail. You will find another love, shinier and more exquisite than the last. In another year's time, you will gamble with $1500 for the next phone sale in order to purchase your $3000 phone. It will be a neverending gambler's waltz for you to dance.

  • Nothing to see here.

Just say you can't do PayPal as you are banned and will take payid. Wait 24 hrs after receiving payment before actually sending phone.

  • Read the terms and conditions of their “seller protection” feature. If you meet all the requirements, then you should have no problem in the event of a fraudulent PayPal case. I’ve had a number of false claims being decided in my favour. In saying that, it’s a hassle - I make a detailed video showing the item (including seals and any identifying numbers), on a scale, into the box, packed and taped (including tamper-proof tape seals) and onto the scale again. Covers most avenues through which they’d lie.

Can’t vouch for chargebacks, though. Given that, as a buyer, filing a chargeback to your PayPal purchase often leaves you with a negative PayPal balance, it sounds like they often wear the cost of chargebacks (or at least when seller protection terms are met). But I’m speculating.

  • nope nope nope… do it in person and for cash only, or get them to payid before coming to pick it up.
i had some loser in the USA mistakenly send me a $US transfer. they then lodged a case with paypal asking for more money back than what they transferred (probably adding some bank reversal charge). Paypal froze that total amount out of my balance. i had to fight to get the extra back.

Edit: the extra charge was refunded by paypal themselves as they can't fight the bank over the amount that was charged back (is what i was told)
