55" 4k TV recommendations

Unfortunately my previous TV is RIP so i am in the hunt for a new TV. It looks from the current deals and prices that its a bad time to be looking haha. Normally there would be deals for a samsung RU8 or something floating around.

Can anyone provide any suggestions for a TV with the following in mind?

  • 55 inch is fine.

  • a limit of maybe $1200. Willing to push a little more if there was a great deal of some kind.

  • No gaming requirements. I do not game.

  • Wouldnt mind bluetooth / 5GHZ wireless.

  • Currently watch SD/HD sport, SD/HD FTA, HD netflix and other 720/1080p content. Disney + is another one we will sign up to with a child on the way.

  • I would like something with good 4k / HDR support. i know this is down to interpretation unless you get a bigger tv or maybe OLED but i mean within my range.

  • Android TV is not a necessity but i guess it gives me some flexibility with apps rather than buying an external box. However, the quality of the panel (within my range) is more important than the smart tv aspects so i would be willing to get an external box if required.

  • Our seating distance from the TV is probably 1m - 2m from the TV. Maybe 2.5m at a push. We live in a apartment so the dimensions are not huge. There is a Sofa to the left of the TV and another sofa directly facing the TV head on. To the right of the TV there is the balcony window/door which does bring some light into the room. With our current TV we would just shut the blinds if its too bright.

  • The previous TV was a Sony Bravia 55" 1080p andriod TV which gave us a pretty good TV experience so i would want something similar at a minimum.

  • I currently do not have a TV so are using the external PC monitor/laptop as a temp workaround lol.

After looking around there doesnt seem to be many deals for a Samsung RU8 55 or anything. From my research it would appear many of the 2020 models in this range are actually a step down spec wise over the older 2018/2019 models.

Some TV's ive seen pop up around my range seem to be;

  • Sony X70G
  • Samsung RU8
  • LG UM7XXX
  • Whats peoples thoughts on the samsung Q60? Its more towards the top end of my budget but i wasnt sure if it was a decent entry way into QLED for an extra 100-200.

Has anyone got any good recommendations?

Thank you!

  • I'm after similar

  • you can sit closer to a 4k tv apparently, so go 75!

I have the 55p8m, it's "ok". It's not a sony/lg level tv, but then again it was $548 with a 3 year warranty. Works fine for my use, and we sit about 2m away.

THe P8S series has twice the refresh rate, but other than that, not sure on how good it is. Their X series is supposed to be OK.

If you go top tier (LG/Samsung/Sony) you'll get better picture, but less other features.

    • 75 is too big for our living area. We dont want a TV which dominates the room. Plus with the brands we are looking at it will be way over budget.

  • I use a Aldi TV (65") from 3 years. It is connected to a laptop which struggles with x265 1080 video but works well otherwise.

The laptop can play any media and blocks ads

IMHO, 55" is too small. Go with a 65" 4K Hisense. Good all round performance, 3 years warranty and excellent customer support. Under your budget so you could add a soundbar.

Too small for what? that's such a dumb comment haha.

OP said they are 1-2m from the tv, so 55" is plenty big enough.

        • I have 3 tv's a 55 65 and a 85, there is no way id ever want a 65 being only a meter or 2 from the screen.

So as i said previously, 'IMHO' your initial comment is still dumb.

            @joker0701: "tv's"
            "a 85"
            "id"
            "meter"

And my comment is dumb? :)

@[Deactivated]: LOL so youre picking on my comment because of me writing short hand, youre a tool haha.

    "short hand" :)
    Did you mean "illiterate" :)

    • -2

You're right, i must be illiterate for writing short hand online, on a forum, which has literally 0 impact on my real life.

All i said was that your initial comment is dumb because stating '55" is to small' without any practical reasoning behind it.

But now i realise, i should not of replied to someone who quite obviously has far superior intellect to myself. (This is pure sarcasm just incase you are not smart enough to realise it)

Just to be clear, you are not writing in shorthand (it's one word, not two). Unless of course, your dominant hand is shorter than your non-dominant hand :)

Haha you truly are a tool.

@joker0701: I'm impressed! You managed to put together one sentence without a single error. Well done!

I just purchased the LG UM7600 55inch and I think it looks stunning. The magic remote is useful and makes navigating easy and the motion in action scenes doesn't blur at all. I believe the um7xxx have the same screens and software on the whole, the difference is simply in the remote and bezel, speakers. Highly recommended I got mine at JB hi-fi for $800

    • yeah i did look at this model but i couldnt get it anywhere during covid. Stock is very limited atm.

  • I’m also really interested in finding a similar TV, actually a little smaller for my space at 50” would be ideal :)
