Yellowfin Tuna Steak $35/Kilo. Coles Burwood/ Vic

140

I saw this at the deli/seafood section last weekend at Coles Burwood. I thought for sure that some ozbargainer would be posting this up so I left it. A week later and I've seen nothing! Shame on you guys!

Looks like because a lot of restaurants are not able to operate and clear stock, Coles has snagged cheap Yellowfin Tuna steaks. They have "do not consume raw" on the tag in the deli, but I like my odds and have done so a couple of times already. Eat at your own risk of course!

I'm usually slow to the punch! It was only after a week where I searched to see if anyone else had posted that I thought to do it.

          Shame on you

  • much prefer tuna sashimi over cooked tuna steaks

    • same fish in the end, cooked vs raw - it's Yellofin

The proper Sashimi is ofcourse using the Bluefin Tuna.
Unfortunately Japan and much of the Asian countries have over-fished these that they're listed as Critically Endangered.

      • I think u over-read the point mate
        I also prefer it raw

        • It's less than $30/kg for the fresh stuff in most Melbourne markets. Sashimi grade.

    • This was normally served as sashimi, in the restaurants it was previously going to, eg Rockpool

I believe coles want to move to also offering sashimi grade tuna in stores that have the customer base, this "do not eat raw" yellow fin might be to see how many people buy raw tuna, even for cooking, because to do sashima grade they can't have it sitting in the display for as long, or just change price and tag on sashimi to "don't eat raw".

I hope it works for them, would be a good change from farmed salmon, or overseas farmed barrumundi, etc.

Can anyone find the Sashimi tuna in store anywhere? Been searching and calling around, everyone I asked have shown me dumbfounded faces..

Lane cove, Burwood and Hurstville(Westfield not station) have the sashimi grade tuna. It gets stocked up at random times e.g. 9.30am, 10.30am. cost $35/kg.

Bought 800g last week and it was good

      • Got any pics? Doesn't sound like I'll be able to get my hands on some so pics are the next best thing.

      • Ow what a shame, i use to live near Burwood. Thanks for the info :).

    • Coles Tooronga, Victoria has had it only three times since launch 10 days ago and each time it was sold out within 20 minutes according to the staff member I spoke to on Sunday.

  • Saw this in the news a while ago, but couldn't work out which Coles stores would have it…

Burwood Vic definitely has a lot. It's been there every time I've been. I've bought a couple every time.

Southland is the only place in southeast Vic that I've heard

      • +1

There's supposed to be 150 stores stocking it, across eastern states (Vic, NSW, qld) as per my comment & info below

  • Is this actually sashimi grade like everyone says cause man I don't trust Coles to handle these properly to maintain the quality?

Coles' tuna is safe for sashimi, now that toilet paper is in stock again.

  • I'm yet to have real tuna that isn't out of a tiny can. What's it like? I'm in NSW so I won't be buying this deal.

It's not just Vic, the above article from a few weeks ago says:

The retail giant will stock the Walkers' fresh yellowfin tuna steaks in 150 stores across NSW, Victoria and Queensland from Wednesday

The Wednesday that refers to is about 2 weeks ago.

    • It's almost able to melt in your mouth. Very fatty. Hard to describe. Like raw salmon but nicer?
