Philips 4K 50" Slim Smart LED TV $399 @ ALDI

1570

Unfortunately there's no model specified in the catalogue. Appears to be the 50PUT6103/79 just googling and looking for a similar stand and branding. Since it's "no longer available" I assume it's an older model they've got their hands on.

Apologies for the water damaged catalogue. Other deals in there are just some dog beds and accessories, and a solid American Oak dining table, let me know if you want pics. Edit: all special buys here https://imgur.com/a/nB8O2cz

Seems like a decent price, definitely one to look out for if it ends up discounted at your local.

… All of the above recommendations are probably only true if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, mac etc), otherwise, go android.

I should probably throw in a vote for the Vodafone TV too - have a few connected around the house and it’s been remarkably smooth and simple. There’s always a deal about on a Mi Box too. Would only recommend the Shield if you want to actually game… otherwise save your money.

        • Any issue with Vodafone TV after Android Pie update?

          • +6

@georgev: Prepare for a long winded answer :P

No Pie issues on my end, and one gets a pretty heavy daily workout - Am actually streaming Disney+ on one as we speak! I preferred the home screen layout of the previous OS so it would have been nice to have had the option rather than it just updating itself overnight… but no real issues to speak of. On android 7 I needed to reboot the device maybe once a week because it would just completely lock up at random and for no apparent reason… Pie seems to have solved this.

The only real cons I can think of are that the Chromecast support is great, but not excellent (the CC ultra is still much more seamless
) I’ve never been unable to cast, but get the odd error here and there and need to try again. Also have weird audio sync issues casting Amazon Prime (the audio is slightly behind the video) - both issues existed on Android 7 and 9…

Other cons are no official Amazon Prime app - easy to sideload (PM me if you need instructions) which works perfectly for everything but HDR… at least with my box/TV (Hisense 55PX) - HD and non-HDR 4K content looks great, HDR, everything becomes washed out - its as if the TV isn’t “recognising” the HDR settings - likely because the app isn’t technically for the VTV - HDR work perfectly fine with Netflix/D+ etc.

Overall I’d recommend in a heartbeat. Is it as seamless as an ATV? No - is it as powerful as an Nvidia shield? Also no - but it’s a quarter of the price of both, has an antenna port, and has pretty much every app you’ll ever use. Hard to beat!

@jackary: i might add bluetooth earpods tend to lag in audio for netflix on the vodaphone tv box that is a huge problem for me as i watch movies at night and with earpods, so there is always alag at some point 90 percent of the time. its really annoying, a workaround is if ur tv has bluetooth connect it to the tv instead of the vodaphone tv box

          • @georgev: No issues at all. They are rock solid.
I have two boxes and one of them was on all day during the school holidays.

    • +3

In case you missed it the first time, the Vodafone TV does everything at a quarter of the price. A quarter. That means you can buy 4 VTVs, or just pocket 3/4 of the money.

Shields were great value 2 black Fridays ago when they went as low as 150 bucks, but the prices being asked for now are a bit crazy. Apple TV… Why bother unless you already have all the Apple devices, but really you may as well invest in an 80k BMW…

If Aldi sold oled TV their entire food produce would sell well.

Buying a TV is a one off investment, not land fill

    • one off investment

No one is making money buying retail TVs.

      • -1

Only lg and Samsung make the most money, but have you ever thought why.

  • +4

Like many brands these days (jvc, blaupunkt etc….) this will be a Philips branded TV, not a Philips made TV. In other words, it's a generic TV with Philips branding.

There are some good generics out there, this may be one of them, but don't use the Philips name as a guarantee of quality.

Persoanlly I'd stick with the major manufacturers (Sony, Samsung, LG, tcl, Hisence etc).

That said, you've got 60 days to return it to Aldi, so there is little risk. Keep the box, packaging and manual to ensure an easy return.

    Stupid Question….

Can this be used as a PC Monitor?

    • +1

it can although in my experience (with TVs generally, not this one) the input lag coupled with the searingly bright backlight (designed for people using it as a TV, not standing 40cm away from it and using it as a monitor) makes it a pretty unpleasant experience.

      • Thank You

      • searingly bright backlight

        Turn it down?

        • +2

boy there are some people who think they're just so smart on this platform.

even at low brightness, TV backlights are generally too bright to use in a monitor environment (40-60cm away).

      • +2

        Quick answer is not ideal.

TV pixel per inch count is way lower than a monitor. This means when you sit close like how you would normally use a monitor, you will have very dotty screen where “True Type fonts” would look like Minecraft fonts. 😂

    • +1

I would not. Did you see the refresh rates? It's 30 on 4k. Let's put it this way: while you're trying to move your mouse cursor from bottom to the top on the screen, you can go make yourself a cup of tea. It's that slow 😂

      • Isn't it 60 Hz on HDMI 2/3?

        • Yes.

          • +1

            @Diji1: Supported Display Resolution

            Video inputs on HDMI1
            up to 4K UHD 3840x 2160 @30Hz

The main problem for using TVs as monitors isn't input lag or refresh, it's the the ability to display chroma 4:4:4.

If it cannot do this then text looks bad.

    • I'd like to know as well? I wonder what the response time is. And if 16:9 is okay for such a big panel and 4k?

      • +1

The resolution would be usable, same pixel density as a 25" 1080p panel.

The issue is TVs tend not to process the picture perfectly, so even though they might get a full detail 4K image from the computer they won't display the full detail (look up chroma subsampling, it's probably displaying 4:2:2 subsampling on the screen at best). This will make text especially look kind of grainy and hard to read.

If you want a monitor buy a monitor, it will serve that purpose much better.

        • I don't get it, one ome hand there's 26 players in the team, on the other hand the other team is playing 2 short?

    • Plugged my 32 inch TV in to use as a second monitor a few days ago. Nothing fancy, just internet and word/excel for uni assignments. Works fine but definitely a little bit too bright and even at 32 inches it feels slightly too big to use as a monitor.

      • i have a 43inch 4k monitor. I would rather have a 4k tv as it comes with a remote control and better built in speakers/

      • i have a 43inch 4k monitor. I would rather have a 4k tv as it comes with a remote control and better built in speakers/

    • Ah no, it can only be used with a car charger.

  • +1

Hi OP, can you post a pic of the American oak dining table in the catalogue please? Thanks

  • -1

Both of them are crap. 50-60 refresh rate is horrible nowadays

  • It’s not Philips as such.

They sold the naming rights to Tempo. It’s just another JVC/Polaroid/Aldi etc cheap tv

    • Yes, Philips stopped making audio visual consumer equipment long ago. The name is just slapped on an existing low quality product.

      • The company licensed to make Philips TVs is basically a spin off company where Philips TV division merged with the OEM factory who were manufacturing the TVs.

That said they seem to get a lot of poor reviews.

  • How does this compared to TCL 50" deal by JBHifive recently?

  • Anyone have an idea on the response time? After a decent sized panel for my pc.

  • Half excited to see this offer and then realised it doesn't have android like most Philips tvs.

    • +1

Nothing worse than getting half excited.

  • Spend the 60 more and get a tcl p8m. You'd be stupid not to

  • Although TCL or Haier would be certainly better, it would be very difficult to find a 50" TCL or Haier TV at this price point.

    • The tcl p8m was 445 last week

  • Here's a $349 4K 50" dumb TV @ the Good Guys. At this price point I'd personally choose a dumb TV. https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/linsar-50-inches-4k-uhd-led-t…

    • While I don't see much value in the "smart" features, This TV does claim to have some level of HDR capability and has "micro dimming", both of which can help produce a better picture.

  • +1

People seem pretty unsatisfied with this model - perhaps that why its being sold off?
The main problems are the locked software with no way to ad apps and ads in the main menu of the TV if you update - so don't update!!

  • +1

Simple question here, I'm basically looking to use the Aldi Phillips TV for Netflix, Youtube and watch catch up TV will this TV do the job well?

Also will be getting a pair of headphones so that the Mrs who enjoys watching tv late at night can do that that without keeping me awake, will this also work well, or is this not worth the investment?

Or should I consider the FFalcon from JB as a better unit?

  • Wouldn't it be better than a 1080 p tv for Xbox one x?
I have just sold my 1080 p tv to buy this.

  • i wonder what they meant by hdr10 and micro dimming lol. whats the brightness nits on this?

  • going to the linked site shows reviews, the good reviews are talking about how good the picture is, the bad reviews and those complaining are the ones saying how shit the os is, given that i have a vodaphone tv box i think im good to go. worse case i return it within 60 days if i dont like it, i dont have that luxury with a ffalcon

    • I'm thinking on the same lines, and factoring in 60 days will also more than cover picking up a better one / a bargain in end-of-financial year sales too.

    • Guys read the reviews linked above.
The OS potentially has ads in the menu. ADS! This would drive me nuts personally.
OS is terrible by all accounts too

  • i was just about to go buy it when i hopped on online chat with mwave to confirm if it has bluetooth (they got the same model) and it does not, what kind of tv in 2020 does not have bluetooth smh, even ffalcon does, anyways not gonna bother now if i cant connect my wireless earpods to it.

  • Excuse my IT ignorance, the Philips TV from ALDI states Youtube & Netflix. Does it come with Stan? If not, can you add it?
    Thanks.

    • +2

I wouldn't count on it, it runs a custom OS from Phillips and all comments seem to indicate it's not very good. I'd assume you get what you start with and that's probably it.

      • Thought as much but wasnt sure. Thanks for that.

  • Any stock in SA? Just been to Newton and Kensington, gone

  • Sold out by 8.20am at Southport :( waste of time.

    • Yeahnah it's more of a Nerang thing.

  • +1

Sold out Aldi Carnegie pretty much as soon as it opened.

      • Just asked about it at Kelvin Grove, Aldi assistant said it sold out upon open and that some customers forced their way into their warehouse to claim one. Geeeee whiz. Shrugged their shoulders when asked about more stock coming in next few weeks.

        • Not enough stock at opening is blatant bait advertising to lure people into the store. It's illegal.

        • Wow what some people will do to save $50 on a TV…

          • @klownz: Looks like the FFalcon is sold out now too.

        • Haha where is this warehouse even?!

          • +1

@TheBargainShopper: I think the employee was referring to the storeroom/loading area attached to the store.

Rocked up at Aldi at 7:30am thinking it would be open as I had given my car in for service nearby first thing in the morning so couldn't go far and Aldi was close by. Surprised to see a queue but when I checked opening time it was 8:30. I had almost an hour to kill.

When I asked around whats up with the queue, people looked surprised at me (like what the hell this idiot's doing here so early and doesn't even know that it's Philips TV sale day). Some nice fellas told me about this TV.

It's not like I got $400 lying around to spend on a freaking TV, I am not jobless/job seeker to have that kind of money just flying into my account. But I still stuck around for the fun of it.

By the time Aldi opened there are like 60+ people in queue all tirelessly waiting to get their hands on the blasted TV. Turns out they only had 1 pallet ~ roughly 10 TVs that I could count flying out the door. Could never understand how people could get so worked up and disappointed over missing out a tv like this one. It wasn't really free or an extraordinary deal so still not sure what's the hype all about..

    • +3

i believe those people are not tech savvy, boomers trying to get a Phillips thinking its still the Phillips it used to be decades ago, not knowing its some Chinese re-branded tv with shitty os

  • +3

Anyone managed to buy one and comment on whether it's any good?

    • +4

I got one, depends what you define as good, for 400 bucks i would say its a good deal. The picture is good if you play around with the settings, streaming 4k on it actually impressed me a fair bit. User Interface is pretty much as everyone says, complete garbage, you will need to get a 4k chromecast or something along those lines to watch anything other than Netflix or YouTube as they are baked in. Also the speakers are terrible, but it actually has a AUX headphone jack so you could use any sort of computer speakers with it, it would improve the sound massively. I bought it for my bedroom so I'm pretty happy with the purchase, quite light too so was easy to mount onto the wall. If i had to use it for my main TV everyday, i would probably look elsewhere to maybe the TCL's for a bit extra
