Sydney to Melbourne

Hey everyone,
I have been stationed in Sydney for last 2 months, and I will be free to visit home at the end of May.

I am planning to visit on 22nd May and come back on 25th May. I want to know if anyone has any information on domestic travel? Would I have to spend 14 days in quarantine? Since they are going easy on lockdown restrictions now, would I need to self-isolate during that time even though I am travelling domestically?

I couldn't find anything on the state websites. Any help or information would be appreciated.

I couldn't find anything on the state websites.

Are you kidding? I'm really wondering how much effort you put into searching.

There's no 14-day quarantine periods for new interstate arrivals in NSW or Victoria (the quarantine is only applicable for international arrivals).

    • Appreciate your response mate. I did indeed look everywhere, but only found information regarding overseas travellers. There wasn't anything on official government websites particularly saying anything about domestic travellers.

They probably won't spell out word by word as below, if that's what you're looking for

"There's no 14-day quarantine periods for new interstate arrivals in NSW or Victoria (the quarantine is only applicable for international arrivals)."

Because there's no quarantine imposed for interstate travels
        Only restrictions.

There's a 14 day self-quarantine period in South Australia for non-essential travellers. It applies to both domestic and international arrivals.

@bobbified: phunkydude was likely talking about nsw and vic specifically as that’s what OP has asked about.

@jjjaar: Phunkydude mentioned interstate travels and said there being "only restrictions". Restrictions on interstate travels were in QLD, WA and NT. So I assume he's talking about interstate travels in general, not specifically VIC and NSW.

              Read my original reply.

There's no quarantine between NSW and Vic since they haven't closed borders. You shouldn't have an issue unless you're flying (more risky than driving due to being in a plane with god knows who).

The reason there are no restrictions between NSW and VIC is because both state governments agreed it was too difficult to police the multiple border crossings.
Basically there’s too many roads in and out compared to the other states.

Given the other states continue to be “closed” it gives an indication that right now it is still preferable to not allow unnecessary interstate travel. Especially between the two states with the highest amount of cases.

The VIC government is doing a great job of this without the support of the PM.

Us lot in NSW need to keep out of all the other states for now.
Travelling between NSW and VIC comes down to individual responsibility.

The clear message is don’t travel interstate at all.
It’s socially irresponsible and morally corrupt.
Just one person leaving the state with the virus can turn us into the next New York within a matter of weeks

This might have changed by the end of May but we need to think that the restrictions being lifted right now will not show any affect for 2 weeks.
It seems highly unlikely that allowing us to visit each other, schools to go back and places like massage therapists to open will reduce transmission

  • I was also wondering about travelling from WA to QLD and back. QLD resident working in WA. I couldn’t find clear information online and even rang the hotline and the guy started every answer with ‘I think’.
I’d appreciate an answer here from someone who has the latest information. Thanks
