Help Me Decide - Apple v Samsung Phone

I am in the market for a new phone and have been with Apple since iPhone3. Last phone was iPhone 7.

I really would have stayed with Apple but too bloody expensive and I have to admit that I am not looking to buy iPhone se or Xr.

As I rather get the top of the range stuff.

Now I would like to get opinions for ya all to see what should I choose.

If you were in my situation would you buy the Samsung s20 ultra 5g for $1350 or go with iPhone again?

It’s just the price that is making me hate Apple so much.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Is there anyone who switched to Samsung after Apple and what are your thoughts??

Thank you all.

Perhaps stick with the iPhone? You’re already in their ecosystem. Apple products are always pricey IMO and hold their value well and it seems like you’ll keep using your phone for 2+ years so you could sell it afterwards. I was the opposite: switched from Samsung > iPhone. What's your budget?

I'm in the market for a new phone too. I have my eye on the Oneplus 8 pro. So didn't vote in your poll.

    iPhone SE?

I converted to Samsung about 5 years ago and have never looked back.

  • I think it depends on how long you want to get out of the phone, if u will upgrade in 2-3 years then maybe the Samsung is the go but if it’s more like 3-5 years then the iPhone for that longer software support

Last 2 phones have been Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and an Oppo Reno Z. Both now under $500 and in my opinion wouldn't be much different from an expensive Iphone or Samsung.

The price difference is massive for not much gain, if at all.

Go for Galaxy S20 Plus, I had the option of buying the Ultra and after checking comparisons between the two the S20 Plus was a much better option especially as the Ultra has camera auto focus issues.

A couple of months ago I've switched over from an iPhone SE, to an S10e, and let me tell you, existence is pain.
Everything you take for granted is not there. I always thought the two systems had feature parity. Turns out I was very very wrong. The Samsung OS is an unpolished mess.

Don't do it man. Stick with the OS that works.

Preemptive disclaimer: I would like any person who negs me, to also explain to me how I can receive notifications in timely manner on my device, because I've tried everything, and I still can't get them all to show up. This doesn't appear to be uncommon, and people just seem to accept it as a feature, and not a bug.

    • Have you tried calling samsung help desk or chat through samsung members app? You may have data saver turned on. This will delay notifications because its saving data. Even if you have data saver on, you can choose apps that will still work as normal (search data saver - then allow app while data saver on - then choose the apps you want to work as normal. (although my advice, just keep data saver off unless you have a very small amount of monthly data).

      • Thank you for your reply. I haven't considered contacting Samsung, as I feel like they're unlikely to provide me with information I haven't found online, but perhaps I'm just being presumptuous. I'll attempt to get in touch.

Regarding data saver, my data saver is disabled, and I experience this issue on both wifi and mobile networks (funnily enough, it is much more severe on wifi).

        • Also try opening settings, click on magnifying glass, type power mode, click on power mode, then make sure "optimised" is selected.
If this doesn't work, definitely get in contact with samsung help desk through the app or by calling. I've had to use them a couple of times and they have been pretty helpful. I think they can even remotely access your phone if you allow them. You'll probably have to wait a bit longer because of the whole carona thing.

          • @Jethro1: Power mode had been set to optimised as soon as I got the phone, so it is unfortunately not the missing piece of the puzzle.

I've tried getting in touch with them both through the chat, and the app, and in both cases they didn't really bother understanding my problem, as if I was talking to bots. They just kept on insisting I change my lock screen settings to their current values. Was not a productive experience.

I'll might go into the store once things clear up a little.

  • Stick with iPhone and buy a second-hand refurb. Mydeal.com.au has a wide range.

  • imo if you have been with iphone for awhile, stick with it. the first thing you may notice when going to samsung, would be the curved display which just doesnt work with tempered glass screen protectors. possibly hold out for another 5 months and wait for the new gen to drop and get an 11 pro or XS when the price lowers even further.

  • Get an 2017 iPhone 8 Plus (the newest big iPhone).
Get an 2020 iPhone SE (the newest medium iPhone).
Get an 2015 iPhone Se (the newest small iPhone).

…or you can get one that has a Notch and is Way Overpriced (Xr, X11, X, XS, Xmax, Pro, ProMax).

I'd recommend one of the three above, if anything at least for TouchID. And they're much cheaper. You can even go for used ones, but you would want to change the battery. That means either using a third-party battery change for roughly $20, and losing the BatteryID stats, voiding the warranty (yeh, Apple are pricks), and losing the IP68 waterproofing. Or you can get Apple to do it for you for $80.

If I were in your position I'd be questioning why I'm looking to spend $1200+ on a phone. In saying that I'm looking to through down $600 which I'm still battling with doing.

I’m the same. $1000+ on a phone just seems more about bragging rights than it is about anything else… “oh you’re phone was $1,900, mine was $2,500…”

The other thing is that the really good budget players in the market have all jumped on the $1600+ bandwagon. Phone brands that were once really good value with great specs are now really poor value with moderate specs.

  • maybe wait for the iphone se plus, from all the leaks it appears to be my next go to upgrade from an iphone 8plus.

  • IF price is your sticking point and you want to stop buying koolaid from the fruitstand why not look at other manufacturers beside Apple's Wholesaler? gsmarena seems to be a good place for to decide.

  • Samsung is overprice too nowadays. it's becoming more like apple for android.
If you want the best value, look other brand such as Oppo or Xiaomi.

  • Why not stick with iPhone but buy a cheaper model (although still much newer than your iPhone 7). Mobile Citi has the iPhone XS for $1,199 - not the cheapest it has ever been but somebody else can probably find a better price than my 30 second Google search uncovered. Still a great phone, very similar to the 11 Pro.

  • I would have voted any other high-end Android phone if you didn't have S20 Ultra in the poll.
If you are just thinking to switch to Android because of price then you will regret your decision because it will take time getting used to the new OS and you will be out of your comfort zone, not sure how you are going to cope with that.

I recently switched to iOS (11 Pro Max) after using Android since it's inception but so far no regrets.

  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Looks like I will be staying with Apple.
Will keep any eye on sales as I would like to buy the phone outright and stay with Aldi $25 a month plan unless someone can recommend a better way to go about it!!!

Once again thank you all for your time ..

    • It's expected that Apple will have a design refresh this year with the next iPhone and will probably come with a bunch of new features worth waiting for, if you can :)

  • I'd recommend choosing between the iphone 11 and samsung s20 rather then the pro and ultra anyway. But out of those 2, I'd personally recommend just going for the iPhone. The exynos chip is way inferior to the a13 and the camera will still be a step down, IMO this isn't the generation to try switching to android.

*Unless you're after that 120hz screen anyway.

always move between Apple and Samsung, not much different this days, but Samsung more choice and like the Note series much more then Apple now, Basically, for scientific and manufacture purpose, Samsung Android seems better, for Domestic family use, Apple better but really don't like the iCloud, Samsung extra micro sd card way better then Apple limit and expense Cloud service, but Ladies really like Apple so don't argue with that and don't bring this point to the front as you know…
