iPhone vs Google Pixel: Security

First of all, let me start by saying that I don't intend to create an Andriod vs iOS war. I have ALWAYS been an Android user, and mostly favoured Google products for their pure android experience and their latest Android security updates/patches. The most important feature for me is security when it comes to mobile phones.

I've always kept an open mind in my life, which is why I am considering iPhone SE 2020 as my next phone, even though I don't have an apple ecosystem, I don't use a mac, I don't have an apple TV etc.

Can people from both sides, iOS and Android, argue their point of view when it comes to security of their phone operating systems.

Thanks heaps :)

What kind of security are you referring to? Nothing is 100% secure.

Edit: I just noticed you say OS. But can you give some examples of what specific security holes or features you are thinking of?

    • iOS is a closed system, which I think makes it more difficult for hackers to find vulnerabilities on iOS-powered devices.

It’s more difficult for developers to get apps into the App Store, as review process is mkore stringent, which makes it less likely for a malicious app to sneak into Apple store.

iphone are locked to their cloud system, which renders them worthless in case the phone is stolen.

These are what I hear :)

Biggest security risk is the user.

      PEBKAC virus?

Highly contagious and incurable I hear..

This is the similar to people claiming Toyota vehicles being more reliable than others. The security of the OS is just one area hackers could exploit. Even if the OS is the hardest to crack or exploit there could be a plethora of methods that could be used to break into your device and/steal your data. Already discovered and yet to be discovered/undocumented vulnerabilities, zero day exploits, bugs and backdoors could exist in the Apps you use and what about social engineering, packet sniffing, etc which are external to the device but still pose a similar threat. Instead of blindly believing iOS is secure than Android or vice versa I think the most practical thing is to follow the best security practices irrespective of the device or OS (regular updates, avoid installing apps from questionable sources, multi FA, complex passwords, etc.)

If you think Apple ecosystem is much secure just read (this is one of the more recent): https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/22/21231454/apple-iphone-zer…

I 100% agree with you, but you replied to the wrong comment haha

I think you have to be a bit more specific, because i think from a security point of view both ecosystems are very similar for the average consumer.

Ultimately, iOS should be more secure with your data - because files are generally sandboxed in each app. A dodgey Android app with permissions to read your files could potentially access files from other apps, downloads, etc.

If you're sticking to recognised, legitimate apps from the IOS or Play store I don't think you'll notice a big difference.

    • I think you have to be a bit more specific

As an example, iOS cloud lock is very difficult to bypass. I wish a similar strong system was in place for Andriod phones.

      .

Nice, I wasn't aware of this. Is there an app in google play store using which we could sandbox all other apps installed in the Android phone? Perhaps tweaking a setting in latest Android versions?

  • If NSA already have backdoor to both OS , which one would you choose?

Android, cause I can fly to 7/11 stations easily and get cheap fuel :)
