Why some people don't include the proof of purchase and/or IMEI when they sell their phones on eBay/Gumtree?

The upsides of providing the proof of purchase and IMEI is obvious, the phone is sold faster and probably at a higher price.

However, I have come across quite a few sellers selling new/almost new phones - with packaging and everything - who claim that they have received the phone as a gift, and that they don't have the proof of purchase. It begs the question, is there any downside to providing the proof of purchase to the buyer?

  • will report to police they "lost" their phone, get police report number, send straight to phone provider for insurance, get a new phone, sell the "lost" phone at gumtree, 2-3 days phone provider will trace the IMEI of the "lost" phone and block.

PS: You can check the IMEI if the phone is stolen.

  • People receive phones as gifts, steal them, get them in other nefarious ways and therefore don’t have proof of purchase.

    Or:

Bought from Samsung portal for a good discount, and now they're selling it to make profit

Why would you include an invoice showing that you're profiting off the sale…?

    • I wonder if you can get into legal trouble for forging the total amount paid on the invoice while keeping all the details the same?

If the phone was purchased on a plan then the proof of purchase is the contract. I wouldn't be sharing out a signed contract with my personal details to someone buying a phone.

If you want proof of purchase buy new? second hand goods are cheaper for a reason.
