and if they don't re-open before then?

seriously, why do they put end dates on these things?

    • +15

Cos it’s easy way to make money of impulsive buyers who won’t ever redeem them or bother chasing a refund

    • if not there income is $0

  • +7

Don't waste your money.. you don't know if they will even survive. On the upside, they've removed the $3 booking fee..

    • +7

What makes you think they have removed the booking fee, the terms state it applies?

      • I tried to checkout and there was no booking fee

        • +18

The booking fees apply when you redeem vouchers, not purchase them. They have never charged fees on voucher purchases.

    • +16

I’m pretty sure the booking fee is applied when you actually redeem the voucher via online booking.

    • Wow $3 booking last time I booked a movie online was $1.10

      • +4

Seems crazy right? Profiteering are it’s best.

One would have thought online bookings take away from the burden of staff…

I reckon they realise more people are using online and they’re just capitalising and charging an exorbitant fee for the convenience

        • +5

They must be getting ideas from Ticketmaster and the like. Next thing you know, they'll start charging a "convenience fee" and a "delivery fee" and a "fulfilment fee".

          • @ak47wong: No wonder piracy is doing well and good.

          • +1

@ak47wong: Imagine the riots if supermarkets, petrol stations etc charged $3 for self-serve.

  • +2

I’ve got 10 that I can’t use that expire at the end of June….I’ll need to see if they can extend their life.

But yes.., why put any expiry date…. they have your money… and you will more than likely use them over time

It’s like their Event Cards that ONLY had a life of several months - Event need to get into the new ways of the world… otherwise they’ll be dead like many other businesses.

    • +2

Telstra Xmas Vouchers? Yeah I have a few of those too, I contacted their customer service and they extended them until the end of October at this stage.

      • I did the same and mine are also extended to the end of October

      • My birthday is at the end of October

  • +5

    I don't know why I don't enjoy gold class.

    • +19

For me it's the fact that there's constantly a stream of waiters going in and out of the movie, distracting you from the screen.

      • +10

That and the constant sound of knives and forks clinking on plates

        • +5

That and the plates are underneath some of the greasiest food I've ever possibly eaten anywhere…

      • +3

The Last Jedi…. Silence … Emotional moment. Plates and crockery …
        It was a free ticket.
And I complained and got another free ticket.

    • +1

I also prefer larger screens, the new VMax at Coomera is the best of both worlds (recliner seats).

    • +1

It's the atmosphere for me. Big difference watching a movie in a crowded theatre and all enjoying a movie together (assuming there's no one really annoying) and a dozen other people, which feels like watching a movie at home.

  • Will the cinemas extend the movie ticket vouchers if they are expiring before cinemas open?

    • +3

Based on the precedent that vouchers expiring in June are being extended to October upon request at present I would say so.

    • +3

Not if they go into voluntary administration

      • -4

        Possible, but unlikely.

      • +3

        Involuntary administration?

  • I can't even log in with my account in this giftshop.

    • +3

To be clear there are two seperate log in's/accounts.

A shop login and your cinebuzz login.

      • I input my account I normally use to purchase ticket and it didn't work after I added the tickets to the cart

  • +1

$20 with no booking fee is an absolute bargain, the new Bond, Topgun and Tenet would be good to see. I already have $100 in gift cards to use but could always put it towards food instead lol

    • +1

booking fee is charged when you redeem the ticket online if you want to lockin a specific session not on purchase of the tickets.

  • -6

    Free corona virus included?

  • +3

Only a deal when it can be used. Right now, there's no certainty that it can be used.

Considering interest, uncertainty and really only saving a couple of dollars (assuming you can take advantage of entertainment book or AGL offers), this us no saving.

    • +2

Saving at least $5 min plus the booking fee, it's unlikely the movie business is going bust anytime soon and it's not like event cinemas is a tiny little boutique cinema struggling for revenue. Not a valid reason for a neg.

      • +1

@solidussnake booking fee still apply when booking online. Agree with @choister its not much saving.

      • Only valid till 31 Jan 2021. What if they don't reopen by then?

    • +2

It's a 36% discount on Telstra tickets, so I consider that a pretty good bargain.

  • +4

Guys i would be extremely wary of this deal.
Cinemas are bleeding money every day now with literally no income to balance it.
This is one last attempt at making some kind of cash to delay an inevitable bankruptcy.

These vouchers wont be honoured when they most likely go under.

    • +4

What makes you think they are likely to go under? Personally I have two movie vouchers, 5 popcorn vouchers from this deal and $200 in gift cards and I am not concerned.

Their ASX release states their current financial position fairly well, including property assets worth a billion.

      https://www.evt.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Update-on-Cor…

      • +5

Yeah looks like they have $122M cash and $545M debt maturing in August with $1.15 billion in equity. They'll start selling off what they can soon enough. At best they survive by selling any under performing Cinema chains or increasing their debt to ride this out.

Its very possible their Cinema division doesnt make it out of this.

      • A billion of assets, bringing zero in cash flow.

        Money on the fire

    • +2

Exactly. They also wont get their money back as an unsecured creditor.

  • cinemas are unlikely to open until a vaccine is found or a cure is found since people are going to be close to one another in a closed environment where if one sneezes or coughs it's curtains for the rest for the duration of the show.

So the expiry date is not realistic they need to put the year 2022 Dec 31st

othrwise you will be an unsecured creditor. Many blockbusters can be streamed on a paid per view basis with the major outlets like Apple Google or even the studios themselves. They already started this with the movie 'The Hunt' this was supposed to be a theatrical release but then turned into pay per view others will follow with Wonder Woman 1984 supposed to be released in June may go pay per view

'The Lodge' has gone straight to DVD and 'The Assistant' worthy of academeme nomination may well go pay per view. And the much anticipated 'The Awful View' will also come out on pay per view soon

    • You do know it travels by droplets right ?

If cinemas social distance there is no issue .

      • +5

social distance in pitch black hmmm
no windows no fresh air recycled air
you do know the person who sneeze or cough touched every chair too in the dark right?
who can police hygiene in the pitch dark? Children do not touch after they sneeze and cough?
oh the virus stays alive on surfaces for hours

        • It would be low risk if they enforced reduced numbers and allocated seats. No/little fresh air in a supermarket/shopping centre also … and then there's public transport. Can also stagger times for a larger window between seatings.

      • Yeah, good luck with that!

    • +1

I think reopening with reduced capacities is more likely to begin with, even without a vaccine. They started doing this before closing.

Highly unlikely Wonder Woman and other major releases will go without a theatrical window. For family and arty films more likely, Trolls World Tour has had much success in the states and Scoob! is also being released digitally.

  • +3

They will very likely reopen this year and most of them will come back. Just depends if they will have any movies to show.
American cinemas are in a way worst financial situation…

Hopefully the studios release some movies this year still.

    • unlikely as consumers know like the airlines just because you start business does not mean people have confidence to do business with you, it's suicidal to be locked in a dark room with no windows and lots of people and all it takes is a cough and then you are stuck for hours.

vaccine or cure is the answer

      • I concur.

      • .. and if there's no cure (which is a distinct possibility), what then?

Chances are we are just going to be alternating between regular life and containment for some time.

  • movies: it's not essential even gyms for exercise is essential is not allowed to operate

  • +3

Looks like they're just trying to get a cash injection.

    • +2

Dick Smith did something similar before they collapsed.

      • +1

Yep - basically: please donate some money to our secured creditors.

  • bad customer service, would not support this company, rather go to hoyts instead.

    • Too true Too true. I only go cos its cheap

    • Interesting.

I hate Hoyts, because they make Village look good. And Village are stretching the relationship, almost every visit.

  • Not sure how this is a deal at a time like this. Save your money.

What's with the expiry? Thanks for your support, we're going to make the expiry pretty close, so you might not be able to use it.

    Rubbish and ungrateful.

  • "Not valid at Skyline Drive-in, Moonlight Cinemas or Village Cinemas. Not valid for use in Victoria / Tasmania."

  • -1

lol as if any savvy consumer would touch this with the way things are right now. it's still so unpredictable even with some states easing restrictions.

  • +1

Maybe Event will survive if they start an "Event Online" bonus with popcorn delivery service…
