Anyone know where I can source min 5kg bag of brown jasmine rice locally? I used to buy the Sunrice brown jasmine 5kg bags when they were half price at wow or coles… but apparently they don't make it anymore :(

    • +1

I saw Sunrice brown rice 5kg at my local woolie as well.

      • Is that the brown medium grain or the brown jasmine? I have heaps of the brown medium grain, but sadly not much of the brown jasmine :(

        • +1

I'm not sure, 'cos I just walk pass the aisle.

      • +3

Woolworths doesn't stock Sunrice Brown Jasmine Rice anymore, just the Sunrice Brown Medium Grain Rice.

Don't buy the 5kg($16) pack from Woolies if it's not on sale. The 2kg. Pack is cheaper at an everyday price of $5 which equates to 2.50/kg.

  • Do you know how old this rice is?

    • +1

Best before jan 22,normally 2 year after packing date so it's about 3 months old

      • Rice has better flavour and drains well if its old…18-24 months..

        https://www.quora.com/Why-is-aged-basmati-rice-highly-prized…

        • Unlike basmati rice, jasmine rice has better aroma and texture when new, that why grocery stores emphasize if it is new crop.

Here is the quote from Wikipedia

In typical packaging and storage, these aroma compounds dissipate within a few months. This rapid loss of aromatic intensity leads many Southeast Asians and connoisseurs to prefer each year's freshly harvested "new crop" of jasmine rice.

        • Only work with long grain to those countries that favour dry rice like indian subcontinent. for east asian and italian/spanish who tend to prefer short grain varieties, this rule is not true, especially for aromatic rice

    • Why do you think it is brown now?

It used to be white :-(

    • +4

Australian rice is the most water intensive crop grown (double that of cotton, 4x for grazing) which is far from ideal on a dry continent in a drought situation.
A range of other countries naturally have a climate that is much better suited for growing rice.

Where did you copy/paste that from?

    • Ignorant, xenophobic comment.

      • -2

No it's a common practice in south east Asia, sorry to hurt your feelings snowflake. https://sciencenordic.com/agriculture-anthropology-denmark/v…

        • +1

          Confirming your ignorance even further.

The rice is clearly marked as a "Product of Thailand".

The article you linked to is about Vietnam.

          Do you know the difference?

          • -3

@jackspratt: A short lesson for you-human excrement has been used as fertiliser in south east Asia for millennia, it's how the Chinese successfully grew their population, I have a degree in Agricultural Science, so you're the ignorant one here.

            • +2

@matttttt: An even shorter lesson for you - I live in a major rice growing region in Thailand.

Thailand is not Vietnam, nor China, and what happens today is not what may have previously happened for millennia.

            • @matttttt: So, you're saying it works?

              • @kale chips suck: Works in terms of fertilising crops? Well obviously, but with the risk of spreading disease. You don't want to buy fish caught in these countries by the way, is that xenophobic? No it's just recognising better levels of hygiene in other countries.

Hom Mali is Thai Jasmine Rice, its not fertilized with anything but normal fertilizer, Hom Mali is Thailands proudest exports.. Ive seen it grown and fertilized in Isaan province Thailand, and they take care of their crops seriously if sub standard in smallest way, theyll only be able to sell as animal grain..

    • did you like the taste of the horrible experience that you had?

  • Thanks just got two, lucky they didn't mark the discount in store, not much around.

  • Hope to get some of this tomorrow
