Boost Mobile Network Reception Issue on Xiaomi Mi A1

I have been using Boost Mobile SIM on my Xiaomi MiA1 for 3-4 months. The reception had been adequate without any calls dropping etc so far. However, for last 5-6 days, suddenly there's been a very poor reception to the extent that voice breaks often during the calls.

I know that Boost SIM pack lists 700MHz (B28) as one of the network bands (it being a Telstra network) and Xiaomi MiA1 apparently does not support this band though it does support all other bands. Do you think this must be causing the issue lately though I can't think of anything that has changed on my side at least? I wouldn't know if Boost itself has had any changes in network lately.

If there any fix available for this issue if I want to continue using Xiaomi MiA1? At my place, Telstra on another phone is also showing only one or two bars so I know that Telstra network has become poor here in the last few days but call dropping and almost loss of reception are issues on Xiaomi MiA1 only so I tend to believe that it could be the phone though I know that Telstra/ Boost network itself is generally poor for the last few days as described above. I am in urban NSW (Sydney).

Nope… Band 28 is the MAIN band used by Telstra now days, so if your phone is missing it, then well yeah not much you can do but change telcos or change the phone.

    • I see.. any reason why Telstra would have started using Band 28 more only recently though? My phone was working ok/ manageable just until April 20th or so. It still works ok from some other places (for example, out on my street). It doesn't in home.

No reason, most likely changing things around in your area to allow for 5G, as that is reusing other bands they use to use.

It's not band 28, literally Boost mobile is terrible.

I have 3 phones, all band 28 and one being a Telstra blue tick phone and all have low reception.

If you're having trouble with Boost you'll also have trouble with Telstra and an even worse time on other Telstra resellers. In spite of the marketing there are certainly areas where other providers outperform the Telstra network. This means if you have great Optus coverage and get a worse experience on experience on Boost the issues you're having would be a result of Telstra availability rather than any issue with Boost itself.

For the OP if you're using Telstra and missing Band 28 you will have a very bad time. Especially as the other bands are being repurposed for 5G which will reduce your non band 28 coverage even more.

Surprisingly, the reception has improved over last 48 hrs or so. Hope it remains so. Definitely something changed in between which created significantly poor reception for a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed for the rest of the year as I am stuck with a Boost for a year now. It’s a great plan so I have no other reason to leave even after the year is over.

  • Boost is the absolute pits, and I question to what extent they use Telstra's towers. I've a phone with Band 28 (Sharp Aquos S2) on Boost, and I have reception in the house literally 10% of the time. I live on the Mornington Peninsula, and have had far fewer reception issues with Telstra. I have to use a family member's phone to make a call. Boost may be fine for those in Latte land, but is rubbish elsewhere.

    • To be fair, currently my Boost reception works fine even on MiA1 which lacks B28. It doesn't show full network bars but doesn't trouble in terms of call quality or call drops. Thankfully it fixed on its own a few days back (I ma sure Boost must have made some network changes that I don't understand). Hope it remains that way.
