This is the perfect time to try trimming your hair back. I did, and wish I did it sooner haha. Looking forward to saving loads on haircuts and hair products to pretend I have hair. I estimated it to be around $550 savings every year since I already own a hair trimmer.

    • Link?

  • Thanks fast fingered Mods 😀

I blinked and my post was edited 😀😀

  • is it really good? What exactly is its effect? Slowing down the hair decline and loss?

    • +4

Put it on twice a day, can reduce hair loss rate only while using, and can also regrow hair in some very rare cases. For me it did thicken my hair a little, and definitely slowed hair loss. Was a lot of effort though.

For real results use Finasteride tablets 1mg/day paired with Regaine once a day should be fine as well (side effects appear in something like less than 1% of people). Buy the 5mg and cut it in 5 pieces.
Also, I believe Regaine affects mostly the hair at the front of the hair and Finasteride is more all around but focuses at the back.

If your hair loss isn't too bad, wait a couple of more years. Stem cell therapy is making some strides in this field with at least one successful trial I know about. Should be available within the next couple of years

Finasteride, sold under the brand names Proscar and Propecia among others, is a medication mainly used to treat an enlarged prostate or hair loss in men. It can also be used to treat excessive hair growth in women and as a part of hormone therapy for transgender women.

        no thanks, i'll pass.

If you believe this medication could have benefits for you, I'd suggest doing some in-depth reading into the studies and statistics, with particular focus on side-effects as that is where most exercise caution.

I did, including going deep into Cochrane reviews, and concluded that noticeable side-effects appear to affect in the range of 1-2%, and there is no difference between groups in the longer term (>18mo).

I now take generic finasteride 5mg in quarters, skip the 5th day (i.e. 1mg daily), for a cost of $6 for month, have thicker hair and paused my recession, and have no side-effects. The barrier is getting a prescriber to provide the script, as it will be an off-label indication. I did it on my second GP, and with 5 repeats have 2.5yrs of supply. If you feel this to be doctor-shopping and the ethics inhibit you, you can ask for a referral to a dermatologist (at much greater cost) if your GP declines.

Finasteride and minoxidil are the only medicines with evidence for temporarily slowing or stopping androgenic alopecia. I use both for < ~$10/mo, with good effect. When you compare the costs to the "clinics" for mens hair loss, who will "prescribe" you therapies with little evidence, you will understand why they are a rort. But they do have very big marketing budgets to finance!

          • @poshjimmyxo: I don't believe there has been any long term studies done though. I remember when I looked at it a while back, that there were questions around liver function and increase above population risk of cancer with greater than 2 years of regular use. I ended up giving up after 6 months as I had sexual drive reduction and erectile issues, luckily it went away when I stopped, but something to consider, as Regaine can cause permanent sexual drive problems. I quickly realised that being vain was not worth any of this effort or drugs. It's serious stuff, with some really crazy potential side affects. My mate got a permanent skin condition after using this also, it built from a rash on his scalp days after starting.

            • @onlinepred: Your 6 month trial is adequate, and your description of sexual dysfunction side-effects sound significant. I too would have advised cessation in order to reverse those temporary side-effects.

              • @poshjimmyxo: Yea regaine has the risk of permenant side affects. I don't know if the side effects I had was from regaine or finasteride. Was lucky they reversed.

            • @onlinepred: @onlinepred is Rogaine can cause permanent sexual drive problem? is it for solution or tablets? sorry for stupid question. I apply Hair-A-Gain twice every day.

              • @sonu1111: It's not related to the application method. Yes it can, very low chance, but yes.

          • @poshjimmyxo: Where do you get the 5mg from? Must I get a prescription from a doctor?

            • @Matcha: Usually prescribed for prostate conditions (at 5mg daily).

1mg daily is an off-label indication for androgenic alopecia.

A GP may be comfortable prescribing.

A dermatologist is more familiar with this use.

A GP could be bulk-billed (free to end-user), a dermatologist is most likely $100s in a private consult fee after a GP referral (you'll wait way too long if you send your referral letter to a public dermatology clinic at a public hospital, if at all).

              • @poshjimmyxo: Thanks mate!! I'll pay a visit to my GP after the COVID19 situation is over and see how it goes.

      • Always add a *potential results. You can't tell someone that these WILL get results.
