Ordinarily, these announcements would mean lower prices for older generation stock in the coming months.
Now however, with the supply chains for so many categories of tech/computing products being severely delayed and limited in production output, plus the logistical issues in getting stock over to Australia, we'll probably see prices remain constant if not slightly higher than last year.
People on the fence about certain tech purchases have pulled the trigger in recent months precisely because of uncertainty over future pricing, which means a lot of consumers that were eyeing off a potential NAS + bulk HDD purchase, have gone and bought up a tonne of stock recently.
A quick check of stock levels for all NAS devices at PLE (zero stock), MSY (zero stock) and Mwave (a few less desirable models in stock with Mwave themselves) seems to confirm my suspicions.
There haven't been many NAS deals this year to begin with (even pre-COVID-19), compared with last year which saw some record low pricing on the DS918+ especially.
Unfortunately I think this combination of factors will conspire to make existing, older generation Synology NAS devices fairly expensive for the time being and the newer generation devices will probably take longer to reach retailers and will remain fairly static in terms of pricing for a while.
Also, according to that Reddit thread, the only improvement in the new Synology line-up is a slightly faster CPU that apparently could even be slower for transcoding H.265 than the older CPU featured in the DS918+
