65-75" TV Recommendations Please. 65" QLED Vs 75" UHD

Gday all. I'm not a TV guy but am in the market for new 65-75". It's for our "media room" which isn't actually setup as a media room. More of a tween kids room / second study. When the house was built 10 years ago the original plan was to eventually put a projector setup in the room, but technology has obviously moved away from that now. Our "main" TV in the living area is an old 50" FHD Panasonic plasma that is still going strong.

Anyhow, my needs/wants are:
- I'm not really interested in "no name" brands.
- needs to be 4K compatible so I can view my 4K drone videos.
- I don't really care about smart capabilities since I'm happy to use a Chromecast Ultra with it.
- We'll be playing 4 player nintendo switch on it.
- We are NRL fans so it needs to do a decent job with sport. I remember when we bought the plasma back in the day, the LED TVs were terribly jerky when trying to watch fast moving sport. The plasma is still great for this.
- I've done a bit of reading on OLED and QLED and one of my big questions is it worth the extra cost to go to one of these technologies. My gut feeling is the UHD will do the job for us. I guess the trade off is if I go OLED/QLED we wouldn't be able to justify going bigger then 65". UHD we could easily justify 75"

So I guess the main question is which would you prefer, a 65" QLED or a 75" UHD? I'm leaning towards the bigger size rather than the newer tech. That being the case, any recommendations?

The TCL 75" UHDs seem like good value, but I've read reports that they don't play well with game consoles? I feel like Samsung/LG would be a better option. But I've always preffered the japanese brands (Sony/Panasonic) over the Korean brands. So I'm struggling to prioritise all these factors…

Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks heaps.

I got the Samsung series 8 65” because it was a good price on eBay. Happy with it so far.

    • Thanks, but i can't justify the price. I get that it's good value for OLED but at more than $1000 less for a 75" 4K UHD i think suits our needs better.

QLED is nowhere near OLED, just Samsung's silly marketing ploy to make people think its OLED.

I went through the same thinking.

    I bought a LG - 70UK6540 for about $1300 when on a super ebay bargain 20% discount.

I went to the stores to see if OLED made a noticeable difference. I couldn't see any.

We love the TV,. We moved our 60" to the second living area alongside a projector projecting onto the wall (about 120")

I read all of the reviews online about how good OLED is. I'm sure it's an improvement, but with mature technologies, the next version is only a little better than the last.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. None of us have ever seen anything with the performance of the TV that makes us think we could have done better.

If I were you, I'd go bigger for the same money

Thanks very much. That's the sort of feedback I'm looking for.

      Ignorance is bliss.

If you see issues with LCD and you don't see those issues on OLED, and it matters to you - this will be insurmountable. However if you look at your LCD and you're perfectly content with that - you do you, I'm jealous, stick with what you're happy with at a price point you're happy with.

But saying there's not much difference between OLED and LCD is disingenuous.

At the end of the day even a $1000 price difference is sometimes only 20% difference on top models - expected lifetime of 6-8 years on a TV, it's not a big yearly cost difference if the viewing difference (to you) is drastic.

Yeah all good points and definitely things I'm thinking about. But I still maintain that a 75" panel (rather than 65") is what will give us biggest bang and that's simply not available in OLED without massive price blowout.

      • I'm genuinely curious. What issues should I be seeing on LCD?

To be fair, what makes OLED better?

My family and I are watching a movie on the TV right now and I don't know how it could be better

I bought a 100" chalkboard off a guy for $20. draw my own 'shows' without ads and virus news, would recommend.

How do you reckon the Switch would go on it?

      • can play games on it, just don't expect top tier fps.

  • Dont' buy a samsung unless you want enforced advertising in youtube and on the smart home menu.

Also the Tizen OS is not well maintained, and is not expected to survive.

    • Like i said, i don't really care about the os or smart functionally so i don't think it'll be an issue. If i watch YouTube on it it'll be cast from my phone anyway.

    • Samsung TV's are not ideal, for a variety of reasons. They went the marketing route, they have mostly edge-lit TV's, and it's simply paying for the brand. Expensive for the decent ones.

    • Don't touch LG LCD. OLED is great, but LCD line is terrible for a number of reasons - quality control; operating system; lag; features; price

    • Sony LCD is probably your best bet quality-wise for LCD, if you get mid-range at least

    • Hisense can be decent bang for buck if on special, however don't be fooled with the premium sounding/looking things - even top end model barely is on par with true mid/high-ish Sony/Samsung/etc

    • At the end of your day your viewing habits will dictate a lot of things. If you're going to be watching hollywood movies in a dark room primarily, you'd be silly to not choose OLED. If you're watching sports (constant scoreboard) or standard TVs mostly in a brightly lit room, you'd be silly not to choose a bright LED.

    • Don't forget the audio. This makes up at least 50% of the movie-watching experience. I recommend at least a 2.1ch soundbar (with subwoofer. These are like $250), and ideally 3-channel soundbar + sub if movies, as minimum.

    • Thanks for the thoughts, StickMan. We had basically narrowed it down to a Samsung series 7 75" UHD (~$1700) and a Sony 75" UHD (~$2100).

Your comments about the Samsungs being edge-lit is interesting. I read some pretty detailed comparisons saying the lighting on the Samsungs is better than the Sonys. I guess I need to go and look for myself.

It seems that the series 7 Samsungs are OOS everywhere, so that's no longer an option anyway. So we've added the LG UM69 (UHD 75" ~ $1900) to our list as an alternative. I've never been a fan of LG products, mainly due to quality control. But unless we're prepared to wait, we may not have much of a choice.

Hisense I'm a little iffy about. I think I'd prefer to stick with Samsung/LG/Sony. It seems like locating stock is the biggest headache at the moment (regional QLD). My Local Joyce Mayne has the LG in stock, or I can get it delivered from Videopro for around the same money. I can't find the Samsung series 7 75" anywhere in Australia that will ship to me, let alone locally. The Sony seems pretty readily available but it's a bit more than I wanted to pay.

We're not big movie watchers, so OLED isn't really a concern for me. We will be watching more sport than movies, so I'm comfortable with a UHD LCD.

Yeah, I'm fine with audio. I've had a 2.1ch sound bar/sub on the Panny for a while now. We'll eventually go for a 2.1 or 5.1ch setup with the new tv when I find something I like.

      Thanks again.
