Which Animal Vacuum Cleaner Should I Get?

Hi all,

I'm currently renting a place with carpet and between that and my wife's hair, I have a tough time keeping it clean. Our places have always had floorboards of some sort so this has never been an issue

I'm curious what people would recommend?

I took the leap and bought a Miele C6 Animal (bagged) vac the other day for $500. And I hated it.

  • turbo brush is incredible but constantly jammed up with hair, and it's not designed for the brush to be removed
  • the bag fills up quickly and then the vac immediately shows its little red "pressure loss" indicator. I don't really put much stock in that indicator but I also don't want to blow up a $500 vacuum!

I've had a good browse around but I'm now more confused than before haha

I'm leaning towards Dyson (god, why do they have so many f**king models??)

Main criteria for me

  • obviously a good cleaner, good suction and thorough for carpet
  • turbo head
  • turbo head should either be self cleaning or easy to clean
  • 90% sure I want bagless
  • I like that th Dyson's don't have any filters to replace
  • I think upright vac is out, it's too fiddly to clean under the couches etc

Be interested to hear peoples opinions

Thanks!

  • How much are you willing to spend? Do you or your wife suffer from asthma or any other respiratory related issues? How much carpet is in the house?

    • Let's ignore the money side for now. I'm happy to pay for quality and ease of use, instead of busting my back trying to use our old Vax cleaner over the same spot 20x

      No asthma etc

House is fully carpeted. Just standard crappy apartment carpet, not deep shag carpet or anything

If ignoring the money side for now, the one vacuum I recommend to everyone is the vorwerk vk200 https://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/vorwerk-kobold-vk200

Yes it is bagged however when you change over the bag you change over the whole filtration system. So there is no other filters to change or clean ever.1 bag will last 3 to 6 months.

Yes it is upright however it can lay completely flat to vacuum under couches and beds still with 100% suction. Far easier to push around and use compared to a pull along.

Average lifespan in Germany where they are made is 27 to 30 years. Vorwerk also made the first domestic vacuum cleaner.

You mentioned you liked the turbo head which is driven by suction. Look for vacuums that have a power head with a removable spinning brush. My sauber has a slit along the brush to help cut the hairs. All you do is turn the power head off so the brush stops spinning rub a Stanley knife along the slit and cut all the hairs which gets sucked up into the vacuum, turn power head back on. Power heads also vibrate the carpet to remove loose dirt from the underlay, which also helps the head glide along the carpet.

The vk200 comes with a heap of attachments that you will actually use, not just gimmicky ones.

Can be picked up for around $1,700 or less.

A great price point to start at for a pull along power head is the Hoover allergy. $699 but should be able to talk them down to $499. 3 year warranty, power head, comes bagged or bagless.

You will never ever get the same clean from a stick vac compared to a corded vacuum. They are great for spot cleans and hard floors but will not do a deep clean of carpets.

Your best bet is to go into a godfreys and have a look for yourself. What godfreys have over other retailers is they can barter, franchises more than Corp, and you will talk to someone who just sells vacuums, not every other whitegood available. They will definitely give you the whole sale pitch, watch their demonstration, tell you why you need a certain vacuum etc but go in there and demo as many as you like, some of the power heads are really easy to open and clean and some will require a screw driver.

Happy to give more advice on other types of vacuums, pros and cons etc. I worked for godfreys for quite a while so have some idea of what I'm talking about.

Would try and avoid cheaper miele machines as they are produced in China and not Germany, genuine bags aren't the cheapest and not very good profit margins so not much room to haggle but still make solid machines.

I have the Miele Cat and Dog and love it but I suspect that may be the model you purchased.

I agree with the two issues you pointed out but from my point of view they are immaterial. Yes the bag indicator is screwed - ignore it and physically check the bag yourself occasionally. And yes it is annoying to have to pull hair out of the turbo brush but that will be the case with any brand, the only real solution is asking your wife to shave her head.

From my point of view it vacuums well and it a good solid unit. I am happy.

    • Yes this is the one i had/have (we've been told we can have a refund)

It does do a fantastic job, no argument. And the build quality is great, it's quiet, cleans well. But that brush………………………..YEESH, constantly cutting the damn hairs out of it

      • I just pull them out, couldn’t be bothered cutting.

Dyson make the best pet vacuum. My mate has a husky and swears by his Dyson for its hair!

  • If you have pets, better to spend the $ and rip out all the yucky carpets and put hardwood floor down. Best investment you will make. It's amazing how many new houses still have carpet everywhere… yuck! Dyson handstick are the way to go. I have V6.

    • I would agree with ripping out the carpet, except it's a rental…

      • Yes thanks for picking that up haha

My house is floating floor, but we moved so i was closer to work. This has shitty ole rental carpet (i mean it's not TERRIBLE but i am not a fan of carpet full-stop)

I just bought a Shark duo after recommendation from friends in the US and couldn't be happier. To test it I vacuumed the carpets with thoroughly cleaned Dyson and then used the shark and still had a FULL dirt container!! Retired the one year old Dyson which was useless in our household with so many pets. Regretted buying that thing all along anyways.

Downstairs we have an LG something for bedrooms that does a decent job too but pets aren't allowed in those bedrooms so no heavy duty work required there.

    • I looked this brand up and they look pretty cool. Never heard of them before so thanks for sharing.

      • Its very very popular in US. Give it a go. Cheers!

Feel you, long womens hair in those spinning heads is ten times worse than pet hair. Perhaps they should make a Human Animal version LOL.

You might be better off with an old school vacuum, just super suction and little bristles.

    • i mean i supose that's an option to be honest, super simple…. But i had a 2000W Vax and it really doesn't seem to pick up ANYTHING from the carpet. The first time around with the Miele and it filled up an entire bag from just the lounge/dining… it was kinda horrifying really haha

  • I will always recommend Dyson, good quality, easy to maintain and it sounds you like need the bigger barrel so I would look at the v10 since they will drop in price with the new V11 model out. There is no lie, they are expensive but definitely worth it.

The models are all the same it is just the heads that come with that change:

    V10 - normal heads included
V10 Animal - normal heads + small motorised head for furniture
V10 Absolute - normal heads + small motorised head + soft motorised head for polished floors

Dyson filter you just pull out, run it under a tap and let it dry.

  • I just replaced my Miele Cat and Dog with a Dyson V11. A lot easier to handle, cordless and more powerfull. I vacuumed the entire place with the Miele (and special cleaner head for carpet), the next day I used the new Dyson and I was surprised how much it picked up. Bin almost full like I hadn't vacuumed in weeks.

    • thoughts on the weight of the v11?

  • It feels a bit heavy in the beginning and a bit hard to move around furniture but you get used to it pretty quick.

  • I have the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog
    I have long hair & I have a cat
    The vacuum cleaner is bagless
The way I get rid of the hair in the turbo head is to get a small pair of scissors,
cut the hair then turn on the vacuum to suck it away - easy

    • Yeah I've been considering the Miele bagless vac actually

      • If you have any questions about it, ask away
