Did I Buy The Right Laptop (2-in-1)? HP Pavilion X360

Hello anyone.

I'm not entirely sure about the purchase I've made. I have time to cancel the purchase while the order processes. I bought it quickly because I didn't know how long the deal would last. I haven't bought a new PC/laptop for many years. I still have time to change while the order processes. I'll be needing it for Uni, some video editing(not 4k), some gaming when forced by friends (wow, dota, maybe an fps. Gaming is for home PC anyway), and touch screen for notes. I ended up buying a 14" HP Pavilion x360 (links to HP au website). I was able to get it for 40% off with student discount and was able to convince them to add in an HP pen for free. All up it was about $2200. I paid $1200 with a 2-year extra warranty. My price range is $800-$1200. It's confusing to me how everything seems to be the same specs, but this seemed like the best deal I could find for my needs. I'm just worried because I've now heard HPs run hot and this battery might not last that long. Any recommendations? Heres the imgur link of the laptop if it's easier.
Specs:
i7-10510U (1.8 GHz base frequency, up to 4.9 GHz base, 8 MB cache, 4 cores)
16 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM
512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
NVIDIA GeForce MX250 (2 GB GDDR5 dedicated) 14" FHD Touch.

Thank you for taking the time to read

What anecdotal evidence is there of these running hot? Seems quite good for the price. I doubt you'll find much better.

Every HP I’ve ever owned runs hot. If you Google it, there is a bit of chatter out there about it.

      • +1

        I second this.

Bought 3 HP laptops before, all burnt hot to the point it would shutdown. Usually starts happening on the 2nd year or just past the warranty end.

Opening laptop and cleaning fan would fix it for a bit, but then it will get to the point where you have to source out a new fan.

By this time you'd be looking for a replacement laptop.

After the third HP. Vowed never to get it again in the future.

For people wondering why did I buy a 2nd and then a 3rd one.

It's because HPs are cheap for the specs it has.

I didn't buy them one after the other. I had Lenovo, ACER, Alienware in between HPs. Would see a cheap HP thinking "surely they've fixed their cooling issue", but nope they haven't changed.

@ops2000: I’m with you on this. I keep thinking this one will not have the issue. I’m looking for a new laptop, because I’ve finally trashed my latest one, and I’m still thinking “ya know” when I look at the new HPs.

            • @try2bhelpful: Yikes, hahah. So it is true. I should call it a laptop then, and maybe I should make sure to have a laptop stand of some sort.

              • @bedavebehave: I would, certainly, get one of the laptop trays to keep it cool. We found one that was a bread slicer thingy, with slots, but I kept forgetting to use it. I’ve been looking at one of the 360s in the black and copper/rose gold at Costco and the damn thing is singing to me. You think I would learn.

                • @try2bhelpful: Cool, thanks. If you aren’t learning, guess it’s time for me to learn some lessons. No ones really given me any other options for same price and specs. I guess I did enough research before buying. So I think I’ll stick with it at least until just before warranty runs out.

                  • @bedavebehave: Best of luck with it. They are great machines but you need to watch them. It is best to find something that allows ventilation around them.

          • @ops2000: Do you see any different brands with the same specs as this? Hopefully they’ve fixed it up this model. If it does run hot, I should be able to refund I assume.

    • Hey mechz, thanks for the comment. As you can see from the replies, people do think they run hot/warm. I thought maybe I was looking too hard for a reason not to buy HP. But the people always come out to point out the bad design.

  • OMG
Are you going to post this question every time you buy a laptop?
    Its a laptop
    It works
Its a HP so qood quality

Now grow up and decide for yourself.
You are buying it for you. Not for us.
Obviously seemed like a good buy when you purchased it.
    Thats all that matters.

Yes, I’m always going to ask questions if I’m buying something new and have no idea. I trust opinions from users here than other places forums. People also like to help on this website. Sorry if you’re having a bad week.

      Calm down, calm down…
I'm just going to leave this right here. I see similarities… LOL!

    I have a HP Spectre x360. I love it.

Mine can run warm. The SSD would ameliorate heat issues that spinning hard drives may have had.

Mine is 2 years old - the battery is deteriorating noticeably - I will buy a new one for 5% of purchase price… no biggie for me.

    • Mm, I heard the spectre has a better build quality. Price difference is heaps compared to this pavilion though. Thanks the comment

hows that word of the day calendar going?

    I am currently running a HP Elitebook x360 1030 G3 for work.

Battery life is absolutely fine, I can be out and about for a whole day without any issues.

The heat isn't so much as issue as the fan. It works really hard to keep the temperature down and is really quite loud.

The problem appears to be the air intake and the vent which blows out the air are both at the bottom of the laptop.

So it cools it down by blowing out the warm air but as the air blown out is right beside the air intake, the warm air goes in again and cycles.

Really stupid design flaw so watch out for that in the one you bought.

My solution to this has been to link it to the monitor, shut the laptop and put it on it's lid so that the vents are both pointing upwards.

The laptop stays cool this way and the fan pretty much doesn't kick in. Switch it the other way round and the fan runs 95% of the time.

    • So cut holes in the side of the laptop??
In all seriousness, I’ll probably leave it on some sort of stand if using for long periods of time. Thanks for the comment. Thought HPs running hot were just an old meme. Hopefully the new ones run better.

      • I had a quick look at the one you wanted and it would appear it vents the hot air out the side so you might be in luck.

I use a stand in the office which has a big hole in the bottom so that helps, it's elevated so plenty of air circulation.

    • I've got mine connected to a usbc hub and the underside and area between the screen and keyboard gets very hot.

1200 sounds ok for that consumer level device. I wouldn't be doing much gaming on it tbh, I like HP's in general. Don't like convertibles much though they in general run hot, most ultra form factors or converts do. It's NBD just keep firmware up to date ect, it will be fine. Just a reality of the form factors and chassis

    • Cool, thanks. You're the first person I've personally heard say they like HP's in general. Either they don't like it, or they just say all laptops are pretty much the same. Which is what I originally think, to an extent.

HP laptops are not what they used to be. Actually many other brands follows this suit.

They have become, cheap, plasticky, too compact hence airflow is not the best. They try to save on costs by reducing battery capacity as the CPU's are now very efficient. Therefore they can brag about it's ultra-light weight compactness.
In my view, many laptop manufacturers have modeled the bathtub curve to spike straight after warranty. Hence be problematic when your warranty just expires.
The best thing is to do, buy a laptop cooling pad when you use it extensively for long periods.

And, most importantly, please don't rely on the HDD as a single point to save personal data. Back it up to another external device/cloud etc periodically.
    Cheers

    • Thanks for the help and reminder about backing things up. It's a habit I'll be getting into.
