Question Regarding Vodafone Minimum Total Cost

Currently looking at cheap options to purchase a mobile phone without being locked in to a contract.

I had a look at the Vodafone website and they state that the minimum total cost for the Samsung S20+ 5G is $1349. The devices comes with a Red Plus month-to-month plan, so I assume there are no obligations and there is no early termination fee for this plan.

How much would it be in total if I purchase the device through Vodafone and cancel straight away? Can I just pay off the remaining amount and that's it or are there any other caveats? Does anyone have experience with this? I can't seem to reach the Vodafone Australia support at the moment, at least not via chat/email.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Vodafone does not pro-rata and has not done for some time and you pay plan in advance.

So lets say your plan was $40 per month
    and device was $1349 Total.

And you cancelled plan on Day 2 of your connection.
You total would be $1349+ $40 to cancel (and possible a port out fee if you ported out)

In reality if you just want the device, buy it from JB or something you are paying full RRP regardless buying from Vodafone.

    • The phone costs $1649 with JB Hi-Fi and $1349 with Vodafone, that's why I thought it might be worth saving a few dollars.

So it would be $1389 for the device with the first month of the plan. That sounds good.

Double check you're looking at the s20+ 5g (that price happens to be the exact same as the s20 4g).

Otherwise you might've snagged a decent deal.

        • Yes I was surprised, too. They offer 4G and 5G for the same price, no matter if S20 or S20+.

If you claim their "network guarantee" you should be able to get the first month waived, so yes, only cost of device.

Network Guarantee requires you to return the device and has since earlier this year.

    $1349

    • As compared to $1649 RRP, yes. It's all relative.

Why would you even go 5G now…? I've seen no reason to bother, it's getting far from favourable reviews for real-world performance (outside line-of-sight).

  • could also be locked to vf?

    • It could be, that's true. From what I've read on the internet it doesn't sound like it is though.

    • Won’t be.
Vodafone haven’t locked postpaid devices for many years.

    • No postpaid is locked anymore

It is $1319.20 currently on the Samuelsung Education Store, minus another $50 voucher you get if you sign up to their mailing list.

As far as I can tell you only need to verify your existing Samanthasung account with a ".edu.au" email address, so if you don't have one of those (not a student or past student) then find a friend who is.

    • That's definitely a good alternative and I already found a few kind and helpful people that offered their help with this. I just wanted to check if there are any alternatives than going through a stranger's account.

  • Vodafone is currently doing a bonus trade in amount with selected handsets. That deal ends on the 27th, you can put the trade in credit as a upfront amount on the next bill. Could help you take the cost down even more. https://teltec.dotfusion.eu/trade-in-phone/

    • Thanks for the information. I had a quick look, they are currently offering an extra $250 on top of the estimated value if you are purchasing an S20 with a Red plan. The estimates are quite low, though. It stated maximum you can get for an S10 in perfect condition is $260. Might be better off putting it on ebay or Gumtree.
