Anyone Ran Aftermarket Batteries in Their Dyson Hand Vacs? My V8 Battery Is Bascially Gone

Hi,

I have a Dyson V8, which I purchased in Sept 2016. So it's had a great life. On low power, it lasts long enough to do the spot cleaning I use it for. But I have found recently that on high power it lasts 30 seconds. Through research its a battery issue. and considering the usage and that its always put back on the charger I don't feel that it is bad life expectancy.

So I was looking at some of the aftermarket units eg: https://www.amazon.com.au/Timetech-4800mAh-Replacement-V8-Ab…
@ $70 but its supposedly 4800mah vs the genuine @ 2800mah. but 73.5 wh vs 65wh

Have also seen some on eBay for around $58 at 3500mah

TLDR: Dyson v8 dead. aftermarket batteries cheaper, but are they any good?

Had a V6, battery died, replaced with aftermarket, 2 months later, battery died. Placed the Vac in the bin gently.

Worked for me. I have a old dyson from at least 6 years ago. Battery died and bought a eBay battery. It works but don't expect it to last long. Lasted a year I think.

  • Bought a new battery for the v6 - only been a month or so no issues - but bloody loud!

  • Best to buy an original Dyson battery, the aftermarket ones are not as marketed and often have a lower capacity than stated.

Whilst original Dyson are not cheap, it may be cheaper than buying a new vacuum cleaner. They also come with 2 years warranty should you experience power loss issues in the future.

Never had luck with aftermarket batteries, they all normally 'lie' and the rated size is rarely the true size.

FYI its $109 shipped from Dyson for a REAL battery, they have a 2 year warranty and they will replace them if they fail in that 2 years. I had one fail after 16 months, replaced no questions asked when I called up. You don't get that with ebay batteries.

  • Thanks,

This was my thinking. the v8 does everything I wanted and didn't really want to go to the newer units. batteries make the unit, and with my cc insurance, 3 years on the battery sounds good.
    will order the Dyson genuine.

Do not buy the aftermarket batteries. Their claims are full of shit and the use the lowest quality batteries they can.

I replaced the battery on my Dyson stick vac with a 3500mAh battery. Thinking that wasn't too bad, I bought it and installed it. It died about a month later. The seller wasnt interested in talking to me, so I took it apart. It had some of the worst quality 18650 batteries in it. All of them were leaking. Printed on the side of them was 2.0Ah. There was no way these were 3500mAh, as these were all connected in series to get to the 22v, so the storage remains the same, 2000mAh

This same eBay seller is now selling 4700mAh batteries, and that is impossible, as the highest capacity 18650's you can buy are nowhere near 4700mAh, so they are just putting the stickers on the units and still using the same batteries inside them. Low quality, low capacity shit batteries.

Buy the genuine ones, they are not much more than the shit ones ($59 fakes vs $79 genuine) or take your pack apart and get it re-manufactured by yourself, or at a battery shop that can replace the 18650 cells.

  • I bought an aftermarket battery for my Dyson V6.

    Would not spend the e

Very happy with the battery so far. Better capacity than my original Dyson.

I have dogs and use it every day on 'turbo'.

Check the reviews for the seller in question and then make up your mind.

    Cheers.

  • Have a DC35, replaced the battery in 2017 with eBay aftermarket advertised as made with samsung cells. Battery still going strong after nearly 3 years. So maybe I got lucky?

If you have Dyson repair shop nearby take it there, for the price of the new battery they will "service" it for you at the same time. Gave mine back looking like new and with a spare filter too. I swear they must have replaced the clear canister part because it really did look like they'd given me back a brand new unit.

  • I bought an after market battery for my Dyson V6. Been 15 months so far and hasn’t missed a beat. Paid $36 for it.

Genuine batteries have only lasted 2 years. I’ve been through 2 of those as well.

  • No help with aftermarket battery but I recently called Dyson about my mum’s v8 absolute+ as her battery was dreadful? They sent out a replacement battery. Arrive about a week-1.5w later (Covid) & I’ve just replaced it & works as new. Maybe give that a try? Mine was 110% past the warranty period

  • Bought 2 of these in Nov 2019 (was $50 each at the time) and been fine so far. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264325585584

    • Crazy timing, one of mine gives me a flashing yellow light during use now 😔

  • I did for my V6.

Apparently, new can do 13mins normal and 9min on Boost for a full charge on the factory battery (2200mah) but never tested it.

Bought the bigger 3000mah one from this Ali store… after 5 full charge/discharge cycles am getting consistently ~11min non-stop on boost.

The colour is lighter than the vac and you don't really notice unless you stare at it. It is also slightly tighter and has to be 'encouraged' to fit into the charger dock as it is very slightly misaligned to where the charger plug sits (maybe <1mm)

Quality will matter by seller but I purchased this one because they have the most positive reviews/orders and average 4.9/5 of all the Ali stores selling a V6 Battery. People just need to realise there are additional common sense checks for shopping on Ali than over eBay/Amazon:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32939561764.html

You also have to think about whether the advertised mAh makes sense as legitimate 18650 cells only come in certain capacities. The V6 is a 6-cell at 21.6v, therefore it is 6x 18650 at 3.6v in series. I did weigh my oem and Ali batteries and the ali was a tad heavier.. i couldn't say it is 3000mAh, but I can say it is more than than 2200mAh and the extra 2mins I get shows. 2mins is an extra 22% in time from 9mins, and 3000mah is a 36% increase over 2200mAh… so realistically i should be expecting ~12.5mins on boost if 3000mAh was real.

  • In my experience, a replacement Dyson battery is much better than the original one that came with the machine!
