Pretty sure these would be illegal in Vic due to size and placement.

Especially if placed as in the pics on the link

    • Do you have a link to your claim?

      • It obstructs the driver's view in that position, which is not allowed.

ROAD SAFETY ROAD RULES 2017 - REG 299
Television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles
        (1) A driver must not drive a vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part of the image on the screen—

           (a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position; or

           (b) is likely to distract another driver.

        Penalty: 10 penalty units.

Can you show me a link that shows this is allowed in Vic?

        • +5

          Incorrect.
ROAD SAFETY ROAD RULES 2017 - REG 300 allows mobile phone usage, as a driving aid, when secured in a commercial mounting and not being touched by the driver.

@auMouth: and not obstruction the driver's view of the windscreen

        • It doesn't mention size and placement. I've seen a lot driving with a phone mounted on the dashboard. Maybe other people can confirm if this is illegal.

            • @Flusen:

If placed directly in front of the driver at eye level this could be.

if places as per pic in link, pretty sure this would be illegal.

                • +1

                  @Flusen:

Depends on the height of the driver.

                  4 foot 10 inches.

          • @Flusen:

That is taking about a screen that is showing media like TV or a DVD

No, that is the applicable law in Vic for any device with a screen.

          • +1

            @Flusen:

Seems strange to not know a basic road rule if you do.

Seems strange you don't even know which law applies.

        • +4

Yes, quite easily actually. Though I agree it's not safe where it is, and that watching video on it is illegal. That doesn't make the stand itself illegal though.

Under the exemptions to the regulation you've quoted, you've chosen to quote section 1(a) and 1(b). Section 2 states, in relation to rule 1,

"(2) This rule does not apply to the driver if— :"

and lists the exemptions. The relevant one here is (bb):

"the visual display unit is part of a mobile phone that is being used to perform a navigational or intelligent highway vehicle system function as permitted by rule 300(1)(b) or (c); or Rule 299(2)(c) amended by S.R. No. 153/2019 rule 4(Sch. 1 item 19). "

Assuming one doesn't obstruct their view - which would be a matter for the indidual in question, and doesn't impact on the legality of a phone holder, it's legal - if one uses it for google maps, Wazw, etc. I agree that if someone were to use it to watch TV or a video, that act would be illegal. The device holder itself would not though.

          For completeness, here's reg 300:

ROAD SAFETY ROAD RULES 2017 - REG 300 Use of mobile phones
ROAD SAFETY ROAD RULES 2017 - REG 300

              (a) the phone is being used to make or receive an audio phone call or to perform an audio playing function and the body of the phone—

(ii) is not being held by the driver, and the use of the phone does not require the driver, at any time while using it, to press anything on the body of the phone or to otherwise manipulate any part of the body of the phone; or

          • * * * *

It's a shame low-effort trolling isn't illegal. Unfortunately, OzB mods seem to actually encourage it from certain repeat offenders.

      • Would you prefer high-effort trolling?

        • Sure, they're often funny, smart, etc..

"Never miss your favourite movie while stopped"

Movie is playing. Speedo shows car going 50kph*. The woman has her hands off the wheel fishing in her handbag. LOL

    • Unless there is something tricky on the screen
    • Same with the photo of the dead straight road in the desert. Phone showing different streets and speedo (which is weirdly mirrored/duplicated on the right) is zero.

  • None of these air vent style holders have a "lip" on the pincers which hook it onto the vent, making it hard to fall off.

    Dealbreaker for me.

    • Hi b-radicool, both of the air vent phone holder have a silicon pad on the clip for better performance, please don't worry.

      • Silicon pads slip, but thanks for the response.

  • anyone have a good car phone holder that would hold a note 10 plus? cant find a good one and this one just too small

    • I just bought a Choetech Wireless charging holder from Amazon, I have prime so shipping was free for me. I haven't received it yet but reviews look promising, specs state that it opens wide enough to hold a Note10+

  • Do they come with any warranty my last one broke in 30 days :)

Is the base that sticks it to the dashboard made of plastic for the Baseus Gravity Horizontal View Dashboard Car Phone Holder?

I have the metal Baseus air vent mount from you that serves its purpose and has survived one summer so far, but would prefer a horizontal aspect.

Through much trial and error have found that any phone holder that has plastic dash mount will be cactus after one Oz summer as the mount will melt into a shape that stops it fixing properly to the dash.

    • Hi opposablethumbs, thanks for your supports, the horizontal view car phone holder uses ABS material, a kind of plastic, but good mechanical toughness, impact resistance, can endure both high and low temperature, use a lot in automotive components.

      • -1

Will it endure an Aussie summer where can get 60-80C for hours on end inside parked car in the sun?

I've had too many plastic mounts simply melted out of shape after a summer, so they no longer will sit flush on the dash for successful mounting.

        • +1

I cannot have exact answer for you, since we don't have direct database for this for 60-80c, we sell this version a lot in Australia and barely has complaint on the problem, i think if it don't expose too long under the high temperature, it will be ok.

  • Why does the item in the first link list 3 different sets of phones it's compatible with? Compatible 1, compatible 2 etc? Isn't it Universal? Or are there different models of the holder?

    I have a Motorola G6 plus.

    • Hi Kiitos, it's universal for mobile phone from size 4.0 to 6.5 inch, the compatible 1,2,3 are only for example.

  • Can you insert and release phone with one hand? I'm get in and out of the car a lot and take the phone with me. Do you have a video on how the phone is inserted and taken out?

    • Hi tatnal, these versions of car phone holders are all gravity linkage, when you put your phone in, it will lock itself; when taken out, the gravity release, you can also easily take out, so they can be operated with one hand. We have video on our page with a Video icon.
