Centrecom - Price increase on DDR3 RAM?

Hi Ozbargainers,

I've been looking to upgrade an old desktop computer with some more RAM (amongst other stuff). Nothing fancy, I was just going to max out the four motherboard slots with 4 x 8gb 1600mhz DDR3.

I found this last week at Centrecom for $65, but there was only one left. I've since been monitoring the site for more stock, but the price has jumped to $89 (37% increase!)

The obvious culprit would be lack of supply due to the COVID-19 situation. Does anyone have any further insight or thoughts on the manufacturing side and if/when the price is likely to come down again?

Cheers

Yes, prices have increased due to lack of stock from suppliers, and will likely continue to increase.

Furthermore not much equipment is manufacturered that requires DDR3. Nearly everything is DDR4. There will be less stock being manufacturered and it'll be harder to find and will continue getting harder to find.

Consider ebay or amazon as there are heeeaps of good value second hand sticks available.

    • Thanks, I'll have a look on ebay, I didn't think to check there.

No one is really manufacturing DDR3 memory for desktops anymore. Low voltage versions of DDR3, often called LPDDR3 for laptops and low end devices still exist perhaps, but desktops stopped using DDR3 a long time ago.

The secondary market however is saturated with DDR3.

    • Thanks, yes makes sense that less DDR3 RAM is being produced.

Maybe I should just upgrade the whole motherboard!

probably also best to consider whether you actually "Need" the RAM upgrade, versus just "wanting" more RAM.

Most people certainly do not need 32GB of RAM, and in 2020 I'm not certain of the benefits of having 32GB in an older system that's still using low bandwidth DDR3 memory.

        • Yes that's a good point, 32GB might be overkill.

I was only getting it because it was relatively cheap but perhaps 16GB would suffice.

    • Thanks, yes I saw some other brands but thought I'd try to match the single Crucial one that I already managed to get last week.

I've read that you can mix brands though so long as the specs match so maybe I'll do that.
