Did I Just Get Threaten by a FB Marketplace Seller?

Recently I have been searching for a used 4k TV on FB marketplace and I found a Sony that fits in my need and budget. I bargain with the seller and he agreed to the deal after an overnight consideration. I drove to his house and picked it up, paid him cash and went home without any issue. He seemed like a nice guy upon pick up.

He continues to send messages through messenger asking how the TV was and although I told him it was good and I thanked him, I felt it was a bit weird since conversation often ends when the goods and money were exchanged based on past experiences. Then the stranger thing happened when he asked me if I can return the TV to him while he could refund me the money, because he couldn't buy another TV. What the heck was that? I thought to myself and politely declined his request. (Told him sorry but that's not how it works)

He then said "Haha I will see you soon". Which gives me a vibe that he's threatening me and I do not like that feeling. I blocked him on FB/Messenger and factory reset the TV.

Although this might be something people say online to act tough but I still wonder if this creep can find a way to stalk me or do something unexpected.

I drove to his house (thank god he declined my delivery request but he knows what suburb I am in) and did not give him my phone number. All he could gather might be my licence plate.

I wonder if anyone has encountered this sort of things and I am seeking advice on what to do to minimise this potential threat?

Should've told him to search for TV deals on OzBargain.

    • Lol. I did tell him there are a lot of 4k tv that are cheap on the market. But I guess he really wants this one back

  • +26

    You're probably overthinking it.

I say "see ya later" a lot. Many of these people, later I have not yet seen.

    • +1

Beat me to it. I would have added that maybe English isn't the guys first language or he's using a translation app.

      • +1

He speaks English quite well when I met him but I do hope he doesn't mean it in a threaten way

    • +1

I hope I am overthinking it. But given the context he's clearly not very happy I am having a hard time looking at it as a casual "see you later bro"

      • +13

Many times when I am unhappy with someone, I farewell them by informing them I will see them next Tuesday.

It has been many Tuesdays, I have not seen them.

        • +1

          …see them next Tuesday.

          You're a funny man! 😂

        • +1

          Just like Christoper Pyne.

        • +3

best part of the easter break is telling everyone at work you'll see them next tuesday

          • @harro112: Why would you…

            Ooohhhhhhhh

(This thread has been surprisingly entertaining.)

  • +13

Take the TV apart, there's probably drugs or cash hidden inside that he forgot about.

    Jokes

    • +1

This is a legit reason why he wants it back badly lol

      • +1

so, have you tried to look inside?

        • +1

Was there a real cash, drugs or jewellery hidden? I want to know as well.

        • nah, too lazy to get it down from the tv unit
plus the tv is very thin, i doubt it really has something inside. Its a sony kd55x7000e

    • Someone watched Narcos.

      • +1

I have not; it's on my giant list of stuff to watch. I just watched Breaking Bad and GoT a few months ago! Slowly but surely…

        • Worth it. Best episode of TV I have ever watched, ever (Red Wedding included) is one from Narcos.

          No spoiler alert.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: If you enjoyed Narcos i highly recommend you to watch
(El Patrón del) if you haven't seen it a real eye opener.

Also alias jj another one based on his hitman.

          • @[Deactivated]: Second best only to "Breaking Bad"

            • @TilacVIP: Breaking Bad was overall better but the single best episode was in Narcos. IMO.

        • You only have a GIANT list. That’s nothing!

    • +3

Probably masks or hand sanitizes instead of drug or cash….

  • +4

He continues to send messages through messenger asking how the tv was and although I told him it was good and I thanked him…

    Are you hot?

he asked me if I can return the TV to him while he could refund me the money, because he couldn't buy another TV

It sounds like he was trying to hit on you earlier and is now coming up with an excuse to try see you again lol!

    • +8

I wish I were hot but I am just a regular dude who wants a tv to watch netflix during lock-down.

If he was trying to hit on me at least I now understand more what women are going through online

      • +2

        😂😂😂😂

      • +2

Why did he send you D pics?

        • +2

is that what you do when you hit on someone?

          • +1

@becku: I heard it is the "how you doin'?" of 2020.

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: I heard it is the "Haha I will see you soon" of 2020

      • I wish I were hot but I am just a regular dude

So you're not THE Becky with the good hair?

Movies have taught me that when a Russian says ' I'll see you later ' after you piss them off… Means you're dead.

  • Are you sure its his TV? I'm wondering if he needed some cash so flogged off a housemates tv or something, and was going to second guess himself but when you said you wern't returning it he said stuff it. Just be careful as stolen items can be taken off you I think by police? (I don't think you'll get in trouble unless you knew, but I'm not a lawyer), but you may end out, out of pocket?

    • +1

Unfortunately (or fortunately?)there is no way to tell if that was his tv, or if that was his bedroom when he moved that tv out of. Either way I don't think it is my responsibility to find out whether he is selling his stuff or stolen goods. If the cops show up I guess I would cooperate and see what happens next.

  • +3

I'd forget about it and move on.

IF they do happen to contact you again politely tell them to stop harassing you otherwise you'll be lodging an official complaint with the Police.

    • +3

I agree. Still feeling shit though. Guess I will play some games on this awesome tv to take my mind of it.

  • +1

If you returned it you wouldn't get your money back.

    • +1

Yeah I am not gonna do that. This is just too weird and unusual. in fact I shouldn't have response once the exchange was done

  • +3

Possibly trying to launder cash, or give you counterfeit bank notes in return?

  • +16

    Just block them?

A week or so pre-lockdown , I saw someone selling Aloe Vera cuttings on marketplace. We had a fair few plants growing in our backyard and offered to give them away for free to whoever needed them. One of the people who took that offer contacted me recently to ask if I had hand sanitisers instead as she was too busy to make her own using the Aloe Vera we gave her. We don't have any. She has since been threatening to report me to "the authorities" for "selling a defective product" to her. Some people on facebook are just nuts.

  • Screen shot, block, move on with life and your new-ish 4k tv.

    • +2

It is a damn good tv

      • +1

THIS should be your focus. Report to Facebook for harassment also. Make sure your profile is secure from random access because he could easily have another Facebook identity to stalk you. When this is all done binge on!

  • +2

Send him a text and say you will me him there later…
ideally a bikies clubhouse or something.

  • +16

Might have sold the TV because it was shutting down unexpectedly. Since selling, realised it was a neighbour turning off their power and TV was okay. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/530374

    • Thanks for the laugh, can't believe I missed that thread!

  • +1

You want to minimise the potential threat…what threat would that be exactly?

    • being stalked and harassed by this guy

  • +2

A week ago I was selling some brand swim shorts on Facebook Marketplace. I get a message from this guy saying "I will buy your pair of jocks for $50"
Surely he made a mistake, I said "you mean my swim shorts?"
    He replied:

Nah man just sell me a pair of worn undies
    I'll pay you $50
    Deal?

It was probably a good deal and not sure if I can keep my OzB license anymore, but I was afraid of potential future stalking. Better safe than sorry!
    Just block and move on.

    • if you were to do that make him paid you via paypal first then send them to him

      • +1

And then 10 years later I become someone important, and the next day all the newspapers will be like:

"Blue Cat willingly sold his underwear to a creep! Read the whole story with original messages!"

No thanks, I am smarter than those girls who send nudes and then act surprised when the photos end up all over the internet.

        • its alright, just make sure you cover your face when you sent the undies

  • Tell them yes, they can have it back, but the price has doubled…

Is this one of those threads where we find out OP did something dodgy and isn't telling us half the story, the other person in this story starts posting and then OP makes a fake account to act like a neutral commentator?

    • Nope.

  • +3

I’ve seen this before, they sell you the item. Want the item back and don’t give you the money back.

The guy is obviously a flog. Enjoy your 4K porn ;)

  • +1

Tbh I block anyone whom I sell something to on FBM proactively.

    • That's very smart, I will start to do this now

  • +2

Seller regret. Seller probably thought he got a deal then realised later after researching it wasn't or as you say he couldn't find a similar model with the money he received from you. Happens all the time. Block and move on. He will eventually do the same. Although it may take him longer to get over it. There are some wacked out people on FGM and GT when you read through these posts. There's a lot of them. By the way is that an essential item. I'd be scrubbing it down before bringing it into the house.

  • I would be worried if he said "ill be back"

  • Is FB Marketplace like a downmarket Gumtree?

    • +1

      Nah. Gumtree is scarier

  • Who cares…. he may have forgotten that there is drugs or money stashed in the back of the machine…. have a look.

Sounds suss that he sells then expects its return…. I guess he received another offer of higher value…

Bugger him… you got it… keep it.

He is all bluff bc everything is on record. Just do not interact with him.

BUT… check to see whether there are drugs or money stashed in the machine.

  • You need to hit him with the Navy seal copypasta

  • +3

Send him a voice msg saying "good luck" in Trobojan accent

  • As long as your mum isn’t on facebook, then you have nothing to worry about.

  • +1

tv broke or got sold already, sorry i wish i could
