    Almost: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/lg-c9-vs-sony-a8g/80…

This is almost as much as the 65" C9 was.

  • Ive got a fair amount of Sony products, including a 75" Z9F and the HTz9F soundbar - but im interested to know why people would be going the Sony Oleds over the LG Oleds? The LG's seem to have a better picture and reviews and are significantly cheaper as well. Is there anything im missing that would make the Sonys $7-800 dearer?

Whats the LG operating system like? Ive been loving the Sony android TV's range of apps and ease of use - interested to know how the LG compares.

Personal advice, buy a separate TV box and just the screen as a dumb panel. This way you can upgrade the OS much cheaper (even fairly nice Android TV boxes are ~$100) and upgrade the panel without worrying about aftermarket support as much.

Due to the niceness of HDMI CEC, you don't have to deal with separate remotes so there's no real drawback to this approach.

      • Yeah 100% - the added ease of having Android TV for the sony is just a bonus. I usually have ATV4K's hooked up to my TV's so usually run everything through that (better audio out options for plex direct play 4k movies). But i must admit, ive been kicking the tires with the Android TV OS and i dont mind some their versions of the popular apps.

Just wondering why the LG is so much cheaper, was thinking the internal OS was horrible and that might have knocked some dollars off it.

      • How are people doing this when they mount the tv on the wall?

        • You can get stuff like this https://www.geekbuying.com/item/COOWELL-V5-TV-Dongle-Black-4…
You can also wall mount the box behind the TV. Most of them are quite small, standard size would be clenched fist size.

          • @Zephyrus: Cheers for that, isnt the Apple Tv similar in size to the Telstra TV?
Im wondering if its tucked in behind the TV, how do you operate it? arent they IR?
Im looking at replacing the wifes tv, & one of the selling points is the HDMI cable to thr Telstra TV will no longer be visible.

            Thankyou again

@chalks1971: That's where the the HDMI-CEC bit comes in. Lets you use the TV remote to control the TV box. I do not know if Apple TV supports this, I use a Vodafone TV Box (Stockish Android TV) and this works fine.

Also the remote of both mine and the Apple TV are Bluetooth, so LoS isn't a problem.

100% agree. I bought a sony TV because of Android TV, and totally regratted it. Ended up getting a Shield TV, and using that as the TV box, plugged into my receiver, and then into the Sony TV.

TV OSs are garbage, even the Android TV ones. Companies don't put the horsepower in to drive them properly, and you run into many limitations (like the stupid 100mbps port in all TVs, or dealing with ARC, and other bullshit like that)

When purchasing TVs, everyone should just forget about the TV os, and buy a TV solely based on it's tech specs - E.g motion settings, max brightness, HDR, etc etc etc. Buy a Nvidia shield, or Apple TV (depending on your needs) instead.

    • Don't Sony OLED tv's use LG panels anyway?

    • Few reasons they are better… Colour gradation, tone mapping, upscaling, contrast modulation, motion, better screen burn in protecting, dirty screen effect, etc are all improved. If you want the best possible picture get the Sony or Panasonic. If you want a TV that does most things well get the LG. It's not a massive difference but sometimes it is noticeable. Price goes up by huge increments on the high end sets with not that much improvement. Reviews are easy to come by when LG pays them off. Most legitimate reviewers will tell you that those two are ahead of LG in OLED quality. Sony created OLED! Even though all panels are made by LG, it's the post processing of the panel that makes a huge difference. Look at how bad Hisense and Kogan OLEDs were. LG still has horrible stutter on so many scenes with slow motion and panning. LGs OS is smoother but is limited to whatever they allow for apps (No Kayo Sports, Samsung only just got it, while android had been running since it started). Android is open source so basically anything is available to you. Almost everyone complaining about android on a Sony TV have a lesser model. If it has the X1 Extreme or Ultimate chip it will be fine, as good as any other OS.

Interesting, never heard anyone claim Sony invented OLED before, probably because they didn't.

Samsung were heavily into OLED in their phones years before Sony, and Kodak with cameras before that, and pioneer stereos before them.

So no, Sony didn't invent OLED, kinda odd thing to claim.

          Wow you are a moron!
          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_XEL-1.
They created it back in 2007. Realised it's limitations and sold it to LG. Do some research before you start being so sure of yourself. LG and Samsung never create their own tech, just steal from Sony. Quantum Dot, OLED, FALD, HDR, MicroLED (Crystal LED), etc. all come from Sony creations and innovations.

          • @Whisper Quiet: Nice, so Sony invented OLED in 2007, years after Kodak released the Easyshare camera in 2003 with an OLED screen lol.

It was Kodak that primarily invented OLED and sold the parents to LG, this isn't exactly hard to find, just look at the OLED entry on wiki if nothing else.

Or just go on believing Sony invented it, up to you.

            • @andocom: That had totally different pixel structure and technology. It's like comparing a first generation gameboy to a current gen TV. Nowhere near the same thing.

None of that comes close to justify the price difference, at all. If it was $100-$200 more I could maybe see the worth in getting a Sony oled over an LG oled.

You're basically paying extra for the Sony tax.

        • Yup, exactly my point.

  • Usual Sony premium for TV that is no better than the LG.
