    I made one recently!

200mm high static pressure pc fan.

    Vacuum cleaner HEPA filter.

    Plastic box with lid.

Its missing all the features like timer and quality reports, but I just wanted cleaning, the rest was a waste for me.

Good price if you want the features though!

Haha that's great, MacGyver'd the crap out of it!

      • +1

Well I have a severe severe dust mite alergy and im forced to stay home.

It seemed expensive to diy when I was looking for number rated filters, till I learned that HEPA passed the minimum i needed for a 90%+ filtering.

        Cheap and easy.

    • +1

      Pics, plz!

      • +3

Ill try, but its literally a pc fan screwed to one end of a storage box.

And a hole cut in the other end for a filter, with some tape to hold it in.

Nothing I can show that you cant visualise. It took no special craftsmanship :p

    • You should post it as a deal. Probably better value than the legendary mcflurry hack!

    • If you want cheap ones you can buy them from china and they are basically like yours for around $50 plus filter charge- aliexpress

    • I'll have to keep this idea in mind! Got a few computer case fans lying around. I've rigged a few up as silent fans next to an oil fin heater for the winter. Pretty sure I come across a discarded vacuum or two on hard rubbish days …

    • +1

This is actually a common recommendation for patients that need air purifiers. We basically just get their family members to rig up HEPA filters+box fan. Easy to replace, low maintenance, and cheap (very important for a lot of people)!

Here are some videos starting with an explanation, basic measurements and showing you how it's just attaching the two together:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH5APw_SLUU
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnIvLBe6xUE

You can easily find more guides just by searching for DIY Air Purifier.

      • Hard to find a HEPA filter like the one in the video though.

        • HEPA is actually better in that it's more comparable to a MERV17 or higher rating filters. But generally, a MERV-13 (essentially a trade-off of airflow and filtration optimum: https://freshairaustralia.blogspot.com/2020/01/how-does-merv…) filter will suffice for the majority and more optimal. You can buy 6-pack of 24x24 MERV-13 (cheaper MERV-12 is acceptable for quite a few people) for ~$100 from Amazon. 2 packs can be had for ~$30/filter

There are rectangular disposable HEPA filters with cardboard/V-frames in Australia but yes, they're harder to source..

      • I've tried to DIY recently with a Vornado fan and a square HEPA filter from Amazon. I tried duct taping it on without much success. I guess the biggest issue is the circular fan and the square filter. Any tips? Thinking about gorilla tape or maybe PVC heat shrink to make a better seal

        • +1

It is indeed tougher with circular fans especially when you can't form a proper seal. What you might consider is wrapping string around and then adding cardboard to direct airflow and then add masking tape (or duct tape). Here's someone's attempt (also a useful site): https://freshairaustralia.blogspot.com/2020/01/diy-air-filte…

    • and Scheduling

    • Yep I made a basic DIY one with a car cabin filter during the fires. When it was all over I took it apart and cleaned the filter. I was surprised by how much it caught!

  • Just how effective are these at reducing dust? Can you feel a notable improvement in air quality?

    • Its the difference between a 24degree day, in a house with fans, vs a house with aircon.

The zircon is 'idle' because its already 24, but the air is filtered.

Your experience will be your own.

    • Bought one during the bushfire, yes very notable improvement in air quality.

    • Personal experience with the 2S filter: Not so much for dust, room is dusty as ever.
Helps with cooking in a small apartment, really helps with smoke, smells, etc. Not dust unforunately.

    • +6

What you might is a vacuum cleaner

    • Makes a huge difference, i have 4 of the version 2 in each of the bedrooms, and they have been awesome.

Only for the airborne dust coming in thru window etc, not dust already settled

      • Changing filters for all 4 must be expensive?

        • kogan was about $40 each, last lot i bought. Still cheaper then alot of unit filters out there

  • Good timing, was looking to buy one couple days ago

What's the difference with Aust version and global?

      • +2

Plug and factory warranty vs store warranty.

    • The eBay link is $284.14?

      • +3

15% Off code PBOLT15, would see it easily if you use a desktop browser.

  • +1

Funnily enough the sensors in it (in automatic mode) works very well. Had left the door open while the BBQ was on outside and some smoke got in. Within a second the unit picked up the difference in particulate matter and ramped up it's speed substantially. Was quite amusing to watch it go nuts.

    • Mine (From this vendor on last deal) seems to have the dreaded “Always 001’ particles fault. Tipped talc near it -small amount - and no change. If anyone has a fix it would be great!

  • Anyone know where to get HEPA filters for the older machines (i.e. not H models)?

    • +1

I thought all of the Ziaomi models used the same universal filters, in either the formaldahyde, anti-bac or HEPA flavour (of which HEPA filters the most).

All three flavours are easily found on Ebay or Kogan (where they semi-regularly go on sale for $39 each).

      • +1

Cheers thanks. I didn't realise the HEPA filter was the only difference because it used to be "original" "formaldehyde" or "anti-bacterial". Thank you I'll keep an eye out on Kogan then

  • This thing works really well when cooking steaks and it gets smoky in an apartment. Clears the smoke in minutes.

  • Does this give more placebo effect than real use?

    • +1

It's not an essential. If you have allergies it may help. It definitely works though - on auto try fart near it and watch it churn up, clear the air and maybe it's a placebo but I'm sure I can hear it's joy in a job well done as it spools down the fan.

  • I have the 2S and it saved me during those bushfire days, though I bought it for easing my allergies as I am allergic to pollens and dust. If you aren't allergic to particles in the air then you probably don't need it

  • Come with EU plug power cord

    You mean Ewwwww

  • +1

Aight. Just bought one. Hopefully it’s going to be good.

    • To be sure…

  • +1

Any deals on Xiaomi humidifiers OP?

Make a stand. Stop buying products made in china. The CCP is already way too powerful. My ozbargain practises have been amended by the ABCs. Australia Before other Countries, but Anywhere But China.

    • +1

Really? Where was the device you used to post that comment made?

      • +1

Funny enough, likely Korea or Taiwan.
Like my PC, it's mostly asus, so mostly Taiwan.

No, I dont consider Taiwan to equal PRC

    • Are there any Australian made alternatives? I'd prefer it if there is, but doubtful.

  • I'm going to jump on this. Something at home has been at my sinuses - once i go outside and breath some fresh air in, all is well.

Where do people place theirs? Does it need to be complete open space…?

    • +1

No - it can sit against a wall or a furniture since the back is fully enclosed. The air intake comes from the remaining three sides and all of the filtered air is blown out the top.

Accordingly, you can put them pretty much anywhere…

      • +1

Awesome - exactly what I needed to know.
        Thanks for replying!

  • People with air purifiers.. do you turn it on 24/7 or just specific time or situation manually?

    • I use mine when I notice it's stuffy. I also use it when I'm cutting plaster because it's amazingly good at clearing the air. But no, I don't have it on 24/7. With my one though even if I did have it on it'd only actually run/activate when the air quality sensor triggers. So it could be left on 24/7 and keyword only be on sporadically, depending on your air quality.

      • which air purifier model has that feature to only run if the quality is bad?

  • Hi OP, you’ve stated in the post that the purifier comes with an AU plug adapter. I have received mine today but it did not come with the plug? Could you please rectify this?

    • please PM your order # and we will send you again
