Why would anyone pay for this???? Either use FreeNAS or your Linux distro of choice, if you are too computer illiterate to do this then buy a ready-built NAS…

    • What are the advantages of unRAID over similar products?
No striping, so safer for multiple drive failures; parity protection, so resistant to single drive failure; flexible, can mix and match drive brands, sizes, and types, easily add additional drives, etc…

      • +3

        All features of FreeNAS…

unRAID achieves redundancy in a very different way to FreeNAS and most/other RAID devices - it's like JBOD with a dedicated parity drive - permitting use of unmatched drives.

    $10 off what?

      agreed… what a ridiculous title…

Unraid is a good product but this isn't a bargain

    • Saving $10 on a product is no longer a bargain now?

      • Not over something that you can get similar product for free…

        • So, for example, if Windows is available at a discounted rate don't post a deal because there is a similar OS for free? :D

        • For those who think a free operating system such as Ubuntu or Mint is a good alternative to Windows, then yes a discount on Windows won't be a deal (to them).

There just seem to be more people thinking FreeNAS and other free OS are equivalent NAS solution, then thinking Ubuntu is an equivalent desktop replacement OS to Windows.

  • $10 bucks is $10 put it together with a cheap n36l and you have something better than any pre built nas

  • it has been $10 off for two years now. I believe there is future discount by buying two and share with friend.

unRaid does actually have some unique features not found in other software, and is very much slanted to those looking to build a media server. Whilst I agree that there are some plenty of free alternatives, none of them have all the useful features that unRaid offers as a dedicated media server.

unRAID allows adding disks, similar to Windows Home Server V1 (but NOT V2…). FreeNAS does not have that same flexibility. It is free however. Whichever fits your needs.

However I can't actually see the bargain here.

    • I thought you could expand a ZFS pool pretty easily with additional drives?

      • I think there is indeed a difference. ZFS lets you make logical volumes (one or more disks) and then combine them into logical pools (one or more volumes). AFAIK you can add more volumes to a pool, but you can't add more disks to a volume once it has data on it. But then again, I haven't fiddled with mine since I got it working so I may be incorrect. Hardware RAID controllers are going to exist at the volume level, not the pool level, so you won't be able to stick another drive into a RAID array and have it just 'figure it out' by redistributing data across them.

ZFS is a filesystem and implemented at a software level, akin to Linux RAID (although obviously it doesn't use ZFS). Personally I found FreeNAS 0.7's media server to be junk so I switched to Ubuntu Server but there are multiple articles that suggest you can add more space on the fly in when using ZFS such as:
