Mesh vs USB Wifi

Anyone have thoughts on these two choices?

  1. PC > Ethernet Cable > Razer Sila set up as mesh (2nd router)
  2. Pc > USB Wifi Card > Main router 2 bedrooms away

I don't have a wireless card in my computer

  • Not familiar with Razer Sila but I would certainly prefer router to router.

Would you consider using powerline adapters?

  • What is the signal strength of the WiFi on your phone in the location of the USB WiFi?
Assuming it's good, then that'll be the cheapest option.

  • Use your phone as wifi card with usb tethering

  • Depends on the Wifi signal strength at your mesh router and the PC. If your PC and the second mesh router is close by then first option is likely to yield better results, because a mesh router is likely to perform better than a USB adaptor.

  • Choice 1 is much better because Wi-Fi uses CSMA/CA, and so all clients must share airtime with each other. Ethernet to/from the Sila will tap into its exclusive 5GHz backhaul and so eliminates collisions within your WLAN (but the backhaul still have to share airtime with your neighbours' Wi-Fi if the same bands are used).

The best and cheapest solution is to connect an Ethernet cable between the main router and the PC.

  • Prob too late, but going through similar scenarios.

Can add an access point as a dedicated antenna to your PC. May have better antennas.

Have tried a $20 2.4ghz USB wifi unit which worked fine.

For whatever reason, 5ghz works better, so trying a usb 3 5ghz usb unit next.

Mesh may be overkill where an Access Point in extender more can do similar for less.

  • I got two razers

100% net speed from the pc and 1 ms
