How to Get Rid of These Tiny Flying Insects in My Unit?

Hi OzB,

I've moved into this unit (highest floor - 3rd level) about just less than a year now. And recently noticed these flying bugs on the ceiling in every room (e.g. kitchen, bedroom, bathroom). Every morning, I'd find them dead on my window sill and tables. I take out the trash every night, don't have any plants and don't have any food lying around.

Do you know what these are? And how to get rid of them?

Thanks for your help.

    Fruit flies?

Guessing you keep your windows open? Could try some super fine fly screen mesh from Bunnings?

If they are fruit flies, keep the doors and windows closed (or put mesh on them). Put any fruit or food you have out in the fridge instead of in the open.

Then make a trap. There are examples online. I used to use a small bowl with apple cider vinegar, something sugary (even a chunk of fruit), and a couple of drops of detergent to break the surface tension. Cover with glad wrap and poke holes for them to climb in.

  • I think bats eat flies?

    • So should OP hire or steal a bat and put it in his house?

      • Then a pangolin to eat the bat

  • Buy that sticky fly tape and hang it up all around the place.

  • Gosh, I had these and they never go away. I removed food and everything and they stay as long as they like. I killed them but they just kept coming back.

It's pretty easy. They need a source. If it isn't you it's something near by. Either close off the holes or kill the neighbour.

    • Likely coming from potted plants.

  • Worth checking your light fittings and bathroom exhaust fans as sometimes they can get in through ceiling cavities no matter how clean/food/rubbish free you keep the place, especially if you are on the top floor.

  • Fruit flies.

Now's the time of year they are active.

Use something like Spray n Wipe on every. single. surface. Focus on your benchtops, bins, pantries, walls, carpets and windows. They will lay eggs on any tiny waste or unclean material. Like a stain in a bin lid, greasy unclean window sill or a stain in a carpet.

Then use surface spray liberally. Keep the area ventilated. Then keep windows closed for a few days.

  • Likely coming from potted plants.

  • We had a bunch of them as well, no idea how they got in or why, but we sucked them all up with a vacuum.

  • Fumigation if all else fails
