NAS Drives 10TB+

I've just counted all my externals and they add up to 27TB. These drives are getting quite old and I have projects spread across multiple drives. Would love have a consolidated backup.

Currently have a Synology DS918+. 10TB*4 using SHR or RAID-5 = 30TB usuable storage and 10TB as parity.

I've mainly looked at Iron Wolf and RED's in the past but I'm sure a lot has changed in 5 odd years.

Any recomendations? Still doing maths on Price/TB and even considering consumer HDD's. WD Elements 10TB shucked and hope to get reds for instance

Shucked WDs are now 'white' instead of 'red' but pretty much similar specs. The 12 and 14TB variants come on sale every now and then and are the most recommended for shucking by /r/datahoarder.

    • Do they have TLER? Or does it have to enabled via a script?

      • I believe it has to be manually enabled.

    • I'm thinking shucking is the route to go.

From StaticIce, not accounting for postage, the cheapest prices:

      WD Elements

      8TB: $326 ($40.75/TB)
      10TB: $409 ($40.9/TB)
      12TB $449 ($37.4/TB)

NOW I have to find out what exactly a White label is. I like to look at numbers in these scenarios. From what I've gathered White label is just a label that didnt cut it to a particular range? Apart from the pin issue, what differs between White and Red's?

Anyway, the 3.3V pin issue doesn't seem apparent when running in a Synology.

      • Check OzBargain - sometimes (eg now) it's cheaper to buy from the US through Amazon AU.

  • Are the official reds a Hitachi 7200RPM helium drive cut down to 5400RPM as well? That's what my 3x 8TB whites are & AFAIK that's what all the 8 & 10TB drives have been for the last year or so. The "real" not slowed down Hitachi model is more like a red pro equivalent, isn't it?

  • Yep similar story in my NAS pathway.
    Have 4x 10tb ironwolf and 2 more 12tb.
But then sucked 3x12tb wd external.
These went into dx517 expansion bay.

Giving me 100tb raw, but have made seperate raid on expansion to avoid loss between the 2.

Probably would have gone 5 WD's had i known how cheap ~$930 for 3 Amazon USA.
